Suggested Reading List for English Majors
About the Reading Lists&
The following lists were compiled by the faculty of the English Department to help students study for the Advanced Test of the Graduate Record Exam. These lists are mo they are excellent texts that every English major should aspire to read, whether or not graduate school beckons. Ideally, all of us would be able to take a class in these subjects and study them with the guidance of a professor who has made the period or subject a specialty. The reality is that most of us will have studied many of these texts, recognize others by name or title, and need to read the rest.If you are approaching a period or a subject about which you know little, it is best to first consult an anthology or a literary history for background, then read the texts. There is no substitute, especially for the Advanced Test in Literature, for knowing the standard anthologies well. Anthologies, which often offer only abridged portions of long texts, can never substitute for the original, but their introductions can give readers backgrounds that are a workable, if not perfect, survey of the period.You may also think of these lis for those times when you are relatively free from other responsibilities and are looking for something great to read. This is a compilation of the best of the best literature has to offer and it would be a worthy goal to have read everything listed here by graduation.

|&The following list does not pretend to cover--in any sense of the term--the field of classical literature or to offer any judgments of value whatsover. It simply presents what, by a wide stretch of the imagination, could possibly be thought of as useful in preparing for the GRE in English, though I doubt its usefulness even for that. (For actual graduate study in English, different sets of classical authors and works would be appropriate to concentration in different periods of English literature.)
For this specific purpose, the translation consulted does not matter very much. In general, the translations of the Penguin Classics are safe (and sometimes much better than that); and in the case of Greek tragedy, the same can be said of the series edited by David Grene and Richmond Lattimore and published by the University of Chicago. Where I have found translations other than these especially useful or attractive, I have noted them below.

&After nearly six months of preparation, and another six months of waiting with anxiety, I received the admission letter from the University of Pittsburgh, and stepped on the land of the United States of America at the end of last summer, exhausted and excited.Life was not easy from the very beginning. I arrived at midnight, only to be informed that my landlord had an unexpected patient who needed an immediate surgery that night and thus he was unable to pick me up as promised. Desperate to get a sleep after a long flight journey, I found a seat in the huge hall at the airport, turned on my laptop, trying to figure out a way of getting to my destination with the heavy luggage&it weighted over ninety kilograms, and that was all I had for starting a new life in this country. Without a cell phone number, I called several friends on my computer, using the wireless internet access&this is undoubtedly the invention of the century! I also had video talk with my family far back in China. They were worried about me when hearing that I was still at the airport, alone, on a raining midnight, and insisted that they keep me accompanied until the daybreak when it would be safer for me to take a taxi to my destination. To my great surprise, however, a man tentatively called my name from afar as I was talking with my family. &Is it you, Yuan?& &Oh, sure, I am. Here you are!& I couldn&t believe my eyes&my landlord was standing in front of me! He kept his promise in the last minute, looking extremely tired after working long extra hours. &Let&s go home right now. But I will have to drive slowly. I am exhausted at this moment, but I think I should come anyway. Thank God there are few people at this moment, which makes it easier to recognize you.& That&s the first dramatic story I had upon arrival in the U.S.&I would not be able to go through the helpless moments alone at the airport without the support from my family and friends, and I am lucky to have a landlord who could keep his promise after overcoming great difficulties.The following few days were filled with various appointments with faculty and staff at the university as I had to visit my advisor and register for classes. The schedule was further tightened when I decided to move after realizing that the house I found online before I came to the U.S. is in reality too far from the campus. Even worse, only two buses going through that area pass by the campus. Therefore, I embarked on an apartment hunting journey in addition to the preliminary work before the semester began. After signing a new contract, my roommates and I were confronted with a great difficulty&we don&t have cars to carry everything we have had at that time&luggage from home country and furniture we bought here in the U.S. Then each of us began to mobilize whatever resource we had at that time, calling and writing to friends who we thought might be able to help. Fortunately, many friends came, with their cars and hands. A gentleman from the church also extended assistance to us although he did not know us in person before that. We settled almost everything within a day, the day before the semester began&perfect timing. Everyone kept driving back and forth between our temporary house and newly found apartment. Our new neighbors also offered to carry some furniture for us, running down and up the stairs. Without doubt, the one-day move-in would not be possible without their kind help. I will never forget about that.&
It is often said that studying abroad is a shortcut of improving one&s cooking skills&a reality to a large extent because canteens on the western campus do not serve Chinese food, but our stomachs beco so we have to cook meals for ourselves. But I would say overseas experience is also a great opportunity to learn the virtue of thanksgiving. As time goes by, I realize that I did not come to the U.S. alone only with the heavy luggage to start a new life on my own. Rather, I have the support from my family and friends.Last Thanksgiving holidays have been peaceful and wonderful. It turned out to be more than a short break from stressful studies. As one of my American colleagues commented when I asked her what American people do on Thanksgiving besides eating turkey: &It is simple. We give thanks for what we are having.& Although I did not have turkey in my Thanksgiving dinner&I had a fairly light meal instead, I come to appreciate the true meaning of this longstanding American tradition&be grateful for what we have had, and move on with gratitude towards those who make things possible in our lives.So, did you say &thank you& to your mum on the Mothers& Day?&CYPA copyrightedby Yuanhttp://www.cypa.usMaking it happen

Game of Thrones

Sherlock

Revenge

Mad Men

Modern family

Rebate或Card Benefit。不同的卡有不同的benefit program,像Citibank Driver's Edge Student Card有1%的rebate用于车的购买或维修,American Express Blue for Student有1%的cash rebate等等。

点点滴滴#Do you want cash back?

J.D.Salinger: The Heart of a Broken Story/
&&Loving you is the important thing, Miss Lester. There are some people who think love is sex and marriage and six o&clock-kisses and children, and perhaps it is, Miss Lester. But do you know what I think? I think love is a touch and yet not a touch.&&爱你是一件重要的事,莱斯特小姐。 I don&t expect an answer to this letter, Miss Lester. I would like an answer more than anything else in the world, but truthfully I don&t expect one. I merely wanted you to know the truth. If my love for you has only led me to a new and great sorrow, only I am to blame.&&&我不指望你会回信,莱斯特小姐。 Perhaps one day you will understand and forgive your blundering admirer.&&也许有一天你会理解并且原谅我这个笨拙的爱慕者。 &"What did one wall say to the other wall?" "Meet you at the corner!".&&&一堵墙对另一堵墙说了什么&&墙角见!&也许人与人之间的相互理解,也仅限于墙角的短暂相接。 &&J. D. SalingerThe Heart of a Broken StoryEsquire XVI, September 1941, Page 32, 131-133&EVERY day Justin Horgenschlag, thirty-dollar-a-week printer&s assistant, saw at close quarters approximately sixty women whom he had never seen before. Thus in the few years he had lived in New York, Horgenschlag had seen at close quarters about 75,120 different women. Of these 75,120 women, roughly 25,000 were under thirty years of age and over fifteen years of age. Of the 25,000 only 5,000 weighed between one hundred five and one hundred twenty-five pounds. Of these 5,000 only 1,000 were not ugly. Only 500 were r only 100 of these w only 25 could have inspired a long, slow whistle. And with only 1 did Horgenschlag fall in love at first sight.&Now, there are two kinds of femme fatale. There is the femme fatale who is a femme fatale in every sense of the word, and there is the femme fatale who is not a femme fatale in every sense of the word.&Her name was Shirley Lester. She was twenty years old (eleven years younger than Horgenschlag), was five-foot-four (bringing her head to the level of Horgenschlag&s eyes), weighed 117 pounds (light as a feather to carry). Shirley was a stenographer, lived with and supported her mother, Agnes Lester, an old Nelson Eddy fan. In reference to Shirley&s looks people often put it this way: &Shirley&s as pretty as a picture.&&And in the Third Avenue bus early one mo
