The Necklace: Reflections and Confessions of Human&s Vanity
&What would have happened if she hadn&t lost that necklace? Who knows? Who knows? How strange and changeful is life! How small a thing is needed to make or ruin us!& This is what impressed me most in &The Necklace& written by Guy de Maupassant. I love the story not only due to the incredibly wonderful ending, but also because of the exquisite description of the weakness of humanity.
In his story, Guy de Maupassant creatively reveals Mathilde Loisel's dreams of a wealthy, splendid lifestyle. Mathilde's lifetime of misery and despair is solely caused by her own selfish acts. And her vain obsession all ended up ruining her life.
Vanity is defined as excessive pride, especially in your appearance. In Mathilde's case, the &excessive pride& in her looks and charm caused her to feel as if she deserved a higher ranking social class and the wealth. When she wore the necklace to the party, she wanted to give the illusion that she was something that she was not. Vanity caused Mathilde to fantasize about her life and surroundings-to live in a world of illusion, rather than reality.
Her life was affected in a negative way because of her obsession with vanity. It is so sad that she honestly felt successful the night of the dinner, just because of her looks and her surroundings. What a distorted view of true happiness and fulfillment! NEither an elegant dress or a beautiful piece of jewelry can make a person who they are. A caring and loving person has to be unselfish. Mathilde Loisel definitely lacked a caring and loving personality. The only person she proved to love was the person she wanted to be. Had Mathilde not spent so much of her life selfishly, she and Mr. Loisel could have had a lifetime of happiness. The most ironic and interesting piece of the story is the conclusion. Their lives were ruined for no reason. Had she told Mrs. Forrestier the truth about the lost necklace, she would have known that the necklace was just costume jewelry. Actually, it&s a tragedy made by herself, for she was conquered by the evil of her heart.
In pursuit of vanity may lead to the loss of ourselves. Accept who we are and to be to true to ourselves or else it will contribute to &constant unhappiness. Happiness or misfortune, it all depends.当前位置: >>
莫泊桑 项链
THE NECKLACE Scene Ⅰ (The couple received the .)Mathilde Loisel was one of those poor girls, pretty, charming and romantic. However, she had to marry to an ordinary. Her husband, Pierre Loisel , was a worker in the Ministry of Education. One evening her husband came back home excitedly. “I have something nice for you,”he said, giving her a large envelope. She opened the envelope, which contained a letter――an invitation to the palace ball. Out of her husband’s expectation, She did not seem delighted. On the contrary, she burst into tears, for she felt pity for herself. She even had no suitable dress for such a ball. Gladly, her husband loved her deeply and agreed to give her four hundred francs to buy one.Scene Ⅱ (Mathildea necklace from her friend.)The day of the ball drew near. Although Mathilde got the dress, she seemed far from pleased. Since she hadn’t a single piece of jewellery to wear .Her husband first advised her to wear flowers, but was refused by Mathilde, for she was afraid that she would be laughed at by the rich women. Later her husband came up with a good idea,” Why don’t you go and ask your friend Jeanne for help? She has married to a rich man and has lots of jewellery, hasn’t she?” Mathilde replied happily, ” Why didn't I think of it?” The next day she called on Jeanne and explained the trouble. Jeanne was really helpful. She took out a large jewel case and told her to take anything she wanted. It was the first time in her life that Mathilde had seen so much jewellery. She tried them on, one after another, before the mirror, uncertain which one to choose. Suddenly Mathilde discovered a black case, in which lay a beautiful diamond necklace. Her heart beat fast. With trembling hands, she took it out, fastened it round her neck, and stood gazing at herself in the mirror, lost in admiration. S” Would you lend me this? I don’t think I need anything else.” “Why, yes, certainly.” Jeanne agreed immediately.Scene Ⅲ (Mathildethe necklace .)The night of the ball came at last. Madame Loisel was a totally success. She looked more beautiful than any other woman present. All the men asked her for dance. She even attracted the attention of the minister. She felt as if she were in a beautiful dream. She danced and danced until four o’clock in the morning. At that time, her husband had been dozing in a little room. On seeing Mathilde, he threw round her shoulders her coat for everyday wear, which looked ugly compared to her elegant ball dress. Mathilde hurried down the stairs to escape the eyes of other rich women. It was terribly cold outside. What’s worse, no taxi was to be seen on the street. They had to walk a long way until they came across a very old taxi. In the end, they arrived at their apartment. Mathilde took off her dress before the mirror. She wanted to enjoy one more glance at herself. Suddenly she cried out in horror. It was at that time that she found she had lost the necklace. They searched everywhere, but the necklace was nowhere to be seen. Pierre hurried out to try his luck.Mathilde flung herself down in a chair, and remained there desperately.About seven o'clock Pierre returned,empty-handed.Then he reported to the police and called the cab companies, but all in vain(徒劳的). “Write to your friend,”her husband said,“that you have injured the clasp (扣钩)of her necklace and that you are having it mended. We must have time to think over the matter.”Scene Ⅳ (The couplethe necklace and had to work hard to pay off the debts.)A week had passed without bringing them any hope.Pierre, who now looked five years older, said,“We'll have to buy one to give it back to Jeanne.” The next day they took the empty case to the jeweller's. The boss consulted his books. “We did not sell the necklace. We only sold the case.” They searched for a necklace like the one they had lost.At last,in a shop they found a diamond necklace exactly like Jeanne's. The jeweller agreed to sell it for thirty-six. They begged him not to sell it for three days, in case they should find the lost necklace by the end of February. He rushed to borrow money from everybody, asking a thousand francs from one man, five hundred from another, five louis here, three louis there. At last he collected the thirty-six thousand francs , but at the risk of his whole fortune. How could he hope to return so much money? And when? Mathilde went to Jeanne’s house to return the necklace, fearing that her friend should notice the difference. However,Jeanne carelessly put the case away without looking at the contents… From then on, the couple had to taste the bitters(苦难) of life to pay off the debts. They quitted the flat and moved into a small house. They bought nothing except daily necessaries, which they tried to do without often enough. Mathilde learned to bargain with tradesmen, ready to quarrel for every penny. She was no longer the romantic woman and turned into an old woman. Her husband worked after office hours, keeping accounts for a tradesman, and late at night copying manuscripts(手稿) at five pennies a page. Now and then, however, when her husband was away at the office, she would sit by the window and think of the glory of that dance. What sort of woman would she be now,if she had not lost the necklace? By the end of ten years they had managed to pay off the debts, including interest at high rate.Scene Ⅴ (Mathilde learned the was not a real diamond necklace.)that the necklaceOne Sunday Mathilde went out for a walk after weeks of tiring work. There she caught sight of a lady with a child. It was Jeanne. She looked as young, beautiful and charming as ten years ago. Mathilde felt her heart beat hard. Should she speak to her? Yes, of course. The debt had all been paid off. She went up to Jeanne. However, her friend didn’t recognize her at all, for ten years of hard work had changed a woman so much. Then Mathilde told Jeanne all she had gone through these years. Suddenly Madame Forestier let out a cry of surprise,” You said that you lost my necklace and bought a diamond necklace like mine to replace it?” “Yes. You’d never noticed it, then! They were exactly alike.” Jeanne was deeply shocked,” Oh, my poor Mathilde! What have you done? Mine was only an imitation, not genuine! It was worth 500 francs at most.”
