A woman from Japan was telling a friend about her trip to the United States. The woman had visited major businesses and investment companies in New York City and Chicago.
“I studied English before I left home, ”she said. “But I still was not sure that people were speaking English.”
Her problem is easy to understand. Americans in business are like people who are in business anywhere. They have a language of their own. Some of the words and expressions deal with the special areas of their work. Other expressions are borrowed from different kinds of work such as the theater and movie industry.
One such saying is “get your act together”.When things go wrong in a business, an employer
may get angry. He may shout, “Stop making mistakes. Get your act together.” Or, if the employer is calmer, he may say, “Let us get our act together.” Either way, the meaning is the same. Getting your act together is getting organized. In business, it usually means to develop a calm and orderly plan of action.
It is difficult to tell exactly where the saying began. But, it is probable that it was in the theater or movie industry. Perhaps the other day when one actor was nervous and made a lot of mistakes, the director may have said, “Calm down, now. Get your act together.” Word expert James Rogers says the expression was common by the late 1970s. Mr. Rogers says the Manchester Guardian newspaper used it in 1978. The newspaper said a reform policy required that the British government get its act together. Now, this expression is heard often when officials of a company meet. One company even called its yearly report, “Getting Our Act Together.”
The Japanese visitor was confused by another expression used by American business people. It is “cut to the chase”. She heard that expression when she attended an important meeting of one company. One official was giving a very long and boring report, and finally, the president of the company interrupted and said, “Cut to the chase.” Cut to the chase means to stop spending so much time on details or unimportant materials. Hurry and get to the point. And naturally, this saying was started by people who make movies. Next time, if your employer tells you to cut to the chase, be sure to get to the main point of your story quickly.
After the woman visited the United States she might feel that
. A.her English was poorer than she had expected
B.it was great fun to learn English and its culture C.American employers were sometimes rude D.it was difficult to do business with Americans
In which situation could the words “get your act together” be used? A.You’ve won a job opportunity in a law firm.
B.Players perform badly in a match and seem to lose. C.Visitors make a tiresome and unpleasant trip to someplace. D.Audience is satisfied with the actor’s performance in a movie.
What do the sayings “get your act together” and “cut to the chase” have in common? A.Their use. B.Their meaning.
C.Their origin. D.Their popularity.
The text is most likely to be found in a book about
life attitude B. travel and culture
C. language and culture D. business management
Here’s a new warning from health experts: Sitting is deadly.
Scientists are increasingly warning that sitting for long periods — even if you also exercise regularly — could be bad for your health. And it doesn’t matter where the sitting takes place — at the office, at school, in the car or before a computer or TV — just the overall number of hours it occurs. Several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die.
the British
Medicine, Elin Ekblom-Bak of the Swedish School of
suggested that authorities rethink how they define physical activity to highlight the dangers of sitting. While
health officials have issued guidelines recommending minimum (最少的) amounts of physical
activity, they haven’t suggested people try to limit how much time they spend in a seated position. “After
signals,”
Ekblom-Bak
said. She explained that genes regulating (调节) the amount of glucose (葡萄糖) and fat in the
body start to shut down. Even for people who exercise, spending long periods of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization, said people who exercise every day — but still spend a lot of time sitting — might get more benefit if that exercise was spread across the day, rather than just doing once.
Still, in a study published last year that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians for about a dozen years, researchers found people who sat more had a higher death risk, whether or not they exercised. “We don’t have enough evidence yet to say how much sitting is bad,” said Peter Katzmarzyk
the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton
study. ”But
sedentary (坐着
的) behavior, the better.” Figures from a U.S. survey in
found Americans spend more than half their time sitting, from working at their desks to sitting in cars.
Experts said more research is needed to figure out just how much sitting is dangerous, and what might be possible to offset those effects. “People should keep exercising because that has a lot of benefits,” Ekblom-Bak said. “But when they’re in the office, they should try to interrupt sitting as often as possible too,” she said.
What is the best title for the text?
Sitting Too Much Could Be Deadly
How to Avoid Sitting Too Much
Not Sitting Too Much While Working
More and More People Sit Too Much
According to the research,
the more time you spend in exercising at a time, the healthier you will be
those who often sit too much are sure to grow fat or suffer from a heart attack
you had better not sit for more than four hours at a time in case you get fat
regular exercise is effective to get rid of the side effect of sitting too much
The underlined word “offset” in paragraph 9 probably means
improve B. achieve C. ignore D. avoid
In the opinion of Ekblom- Bak, you’d better have a rest in the office by
having a walk around your office
reading a magazine or newspaper
chatting online or playing computer games
listening to music with your head on the desk
Philo Farnsworth was a man who made it possible for one of the most important communication devices — television to be created. Philo was born on August 19th, 1906, near
Indian Creek in the western state of Utah. He attended a very small school near his family’s farm. He did very well in school. He asked his teacher for special help in science. The teacher began helping Philo learn a great deal more than most young students could understand.
One night, Philo read a magazine story about the idea of sending pictures and sound through the air. Anyone with a device that could receive this electronic information could watch the pictures and hear the sound. The magazine story said some of the world’s best scientists were using special machines to try to make a kind of device to send pictures.
14-year-old Philo decided these famous scientists were wrong and that mechanical devices would never work. He decided that such a device would have to be electronic. Philo knew electrons(电子) could be made to move extremely fast. All he would have to do was to find a way
to make electrons do the work. Very quickly Philo had an idea for such a receiver. It would trap light in a container and send the light on a line of electrons. Philo called it “light in a bottle”. Several days later, Philo told his teacher about a device that could capture(捕获) pictures. He drew
a plan for it, which he gave his teacher. Philo’s drawing seemed very simple, but it clearly showed the information needed to build a television. In fact, all television equipment today still uses Philo’s early idea. Philo Farnsworth was only 14 years old then. He knew no one would listen to a child. Experts say that probably only ten scientists in the world at that time could have understood his idea.
On September 7th, 1927, Philo turned on a device that was the first working television receiver. In another room was the first television camera. Philo had invented the special camera tube earlier that year. The image produced on the receiver was not very clear, but the device
worked. In 1930, the United States government gave Philo patent documents(专利). These
protect his invention from being copied by others.
Before he was 14 years old,
Philo had had a very strong interest in science
Philo had learned a great deal in science from his father
Philo had helped his parents on their family’s farm
Philo had formed the idea of sending pictures and sound through the air
The underlined word “it” in the fourth paragraph refers to
a container sending pictures and sound through the air
a receiver that held light and sent it on a line of electrons
a light box with a line of electrons in a bottle
a way to make electrons send pictures
We can infer from the text that Philo’s idea
was not recognized at first
was only understood by his teacher
was turned into a television receiver immediately
was widely used in all television equipment in 1927

We often close ourselves off when painful events happen in our life. Instead of letting the world soften us, we let it drive us deeper into ourselves.
The item listed below are four tips you can open your heart more fully and completely.
Breathe into pain
Whenever a painful situation arises in your life, try to face it instead of running away.
57 When the sadness strikes, take a deep breath and accept it. By using our breath, we soften our experiences and allow more newness.
We’re often confused at the next step to take. Actually, we can try a new decision making process. To start the process, we may ask, “Heart, what decision should I make here? What action feels the most right?” See what comes up, then put it into practice and evaluate the outcome.
Spend time alone
For most of our life we’re surrounded by people: our friends, family members and strangers. 59
When you spend time in solitude(孤独), you’re free from the influence of other people. It
might be painful at first, but eventually you’ll add a whole new layer of depth and understanding into life.
Get out of yourself
60 But in reality, they actually work hand-in-hand. After you’ve explored the depth of yourself, you come away with a new understanding.
Now, it’s time to share that, not through telling others, but through being with others.
Have a light heart
Ask your heart what it wants
Is there anything I’m hiding from myself?
How often do we really spend time alone?
This may seem to go against the last tip to some degree.
We should open our hearts and take action to heal the wounds.
When we run away from sadness, it gets stronger and more real.
