Three British Muslim siblings were left traumatised after being escorted off a plane in London and interrogated on the tarmac as armed police kept watch, after fellow passengers accused them of being members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group.
Sakina Dharas, 24, her sister Maryam, 19, and their brother Ali, 21, were on board EasyJet flight EZY3249 from London's Stansted Airport to the Italian city of Naples on August 17.
Sakina told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that as the plane was about to take off, a crew member ordered the siblings off the aircraft and escorted them down the staircase to the tarmac, where they were met by armed police and an MI5 agent who questioned them for one hour.
Earlier, two passengers - also travelling to Naples - had told authorities that the siblings had been looking at a mobile phone screen that showed either Arabic text or the words "praise be to Allah", Sakina said.
"A passenger on your flight has claimed that you three are members of ISIS," the MI5 agent said to the siblings, according to Sakina, a clinical pharmacist.
"The minute that I saw police standing there, I was extremely emotional," she said.
"We had nothing at all [on our phones]. We don't even speak Arabic, we're [of] Indian [origin]."
Sakina added that her brother had not looked at his phone during their time at Stansted.
The only Arabic in her smartphone is within an app featuring verses from the Quran, she said, which "wasn't open" throughout their time in the airport.
During their one-hour interrogation on the tarmac, Sakina said she was asked to explain - page by page - the details of various entry stamps on her passport. She also showed the MI5 agent recent WhatsApp messages. The siblings provided answers relating to their personal lives and were questioned on their home addresses, workplaces, social media history and parents' professions.
Sakina said the agent told them that he had already performed checks on the family and was simply verifying the information, before warning her that he would be "doing more research on you, and if anything comes back, I'll be here waiting on your return".
The siblings, who are from northwest London. were then allowed back on the plane, which had been delayed.
'Nervous and embarrassed'
"I was extremely nervous and embarrassed," said Sakina, who also wrote an account of the event page.
"I thought, shouldn't they [the agent and police officers] be coming up [on the plane] with us, to show the other passengers that we hadn't done anything wrong, to say, 'Don't worry, it was a misunderstanding?'
"Our holiday in Italy was ruined. It played on our minds the whole time."
EasyJet confirmed the incident to Al Jazeera.
"Following concerns raised by a passenger during the boarding of flight … a member of ground staff requested the assistance of the police who took the decision to talk to three passengers at the bottom of the aircraft steps, before departure," the company said.
"The safety and security of ... passengers and crew is our highest priority which means that if a security concern is raised we will always investigate it as a precautionary measure.
"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to the passengers."
Sakina said she and her siblings were victims of "racial profiling".
"I'm still very annoyed that someone [the accusing passengers] can get away with a blatant lie," she said, adding that she would take legal action "if I knew a way to do so".
The incident comes at a time of
in the UK.
Sakina said before the plane experience, that she had received "the odd racist remark about my headscarf".
"With the way things are spun in the media and the climate we're in, we're growing accustomed to it, and desensitised … More education is the best way to battle ignorance," she added.
Muslims around the world are increasingly subject to discrimination as Islam is conflated with "terrorism".
'Humiliating public interrogations'
Rights groups said that while security was important, efforts should be made to protect innocent people.

"It's absolutely right that security is a foremost priority for airlines, and that genuine causes for concern are properly investigated to guarantee the safety of passengers," Rosie Brighouse, a legal officer at the UK-based rights group Liberty, told Al Jazeera.
"However, it is also important that innocent people aren't subjected to humiliating public interrogations, and it is therefore incumbent on the authorities to use their common sense, and subject reported concerns to basic credibility checks, before deciding how to respond."
Yasmine Ahmed, director of Rights Watch UK, said the Dharas' case raised "serious human rights concerns".
"It is completely unacceptable that young, British Muslims are subject to this treatment," she told Al Jazeera.
"The government must immediately explain under what powers they acted, and how it is necessary and proportionate, on the basis of a spurious claim by a fellow passenger, to demand that three young British Muslims disembark an aircraft and be subject to questioning by an MI5 officer and told that the officer may be waiting for them on their return."
Such action carried a "risk [of] having a counterproductive effect by alienating and isolating young, British Muslims," she said.
"Incidents such as these, which unfortunately are all too familiar, raise very serious questions about whether the government is genuinely committed to upholding the very British values that it espouses in its counter terrorism strategy and whether the government's counter terrorism strategy is driven by efficacy or popularism."

Aurora LightningStrike
The Vertical Take-Off and Landing Experimental Aircraft (VTOL X-Plane) program is an
research project sponsored by the
(DARPA). The goal of the program is to demonstrate a
aircraft design that can take off vertically and efficiently hover, while flying faster than conventional . There have been many previous attempts, most of them unsuccessful.
A helicopter with a conventional rotor layout has a theoretical top speed of 200 knots (230  370 km/h), after which it suffers from . Some designs have successfully created hovering and high-speed aircraft, including the
that can fly at 275 knots (316  509 km/h) and the
that flew at 260 knots (300  480 km/h), but both made significant aerodynamic compromises to hovering efficiency or range. DARPA's goal is to demonstrate a VTOL aircraft that can achieve a sustained top speed of 300 to 400 knots (345 to 460 mph (555 to 740 km/h)).

On 18 March 2014, DARPA announced that Sikorsky, Aurora Flight Sciences, , and
had been selected to compete for the VTOL X-plane. The four companies have based their designs on unmanned aircraft and will compete over the next 20 months. The name of Aurora's submission was revealed as the LightningStrike in February and although the design was unknown, the company has a history of producing ducted fan and hybrid propulsion aircraft. Karem Aircraft was expected to propose a
aircraft with an optimum speed rotor. The Boeing PhantomSwift embedded twin lifting fans inside the fuselage with tilting ducted fans mounted on wingtips for lif a scale demonstrator was built and flown by the company in 2013. Sikorsky teamed with
for a "low complexity" design that combined fixed wing aerodynamics and advanced rotor control. A single design was to be selected in autumn 2015 for a $95 million contract to build a demonstrator in phase 2.
Rotor Blown Wing - Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin teamed to develop their unmanned rotor blown wing concept. They claimed it integrated fixed wing aerodynamics and advanced rotor control to provide a low complexity configuration. An artist depiction of Sikorsky's Rotor Blown Wing bore visual resemblance to the Boeing Heliwing, an unmanned
intended to reach 180 kn (210  330 km/h) it first flew in April 1995 but crashed in July and the project was shelved. Sikorsky confirmed that the Rotor Blown Wing would be a tailsitter, with its name suggesting that the wing remains aligned into the proprotor wash during transition between vertical and forward, reducing download on the wing in hover mode.
LightningStrike - Aurora Flight Sciences' LightningStrike would achieve high overall efficiency by integrating the propulsion into the air vehicle's aerodynamic design. The company has experience with ducted-fan designs through
series aircraft, also under DARPA programs, and with hybrid-electric propulsion with the
proof-of-concept aircraft to create a design providing vertical takeoff and landing with high-speed horizontal flight. Levering this experience Aurora Flight Sciences' developed a revolutionary vehicle concept that employs Electric Distributed Propulsion (EDP) in eighteen 31 in (79 cm) wing fans, and six 21 in (53 cm) canard fans, driven by 3
of electricity.
Karem tiltrotor - Karem Aircraft submitted a tiltrotor concept called TR36XP, employing a slender-bodied fuselage with a high-aspect-ratio . The outer sections of the wing, together with two 36 ft rotor/propellers, rotated through 90 degrees for transition between hover and forward flight, powered by two .
PhantomSwift - Boeing's PhantomSwift concept had two large internal fans to provide lift with two wingtip fans that provide stability while hovering. In forward flight, the internal fans stop supplying power and the wingtip fans provide thrust. Boeing claimed that this configuration was 50 percent more efficient in the hover than a typical helicopter, and expected to have a top speed of 740 km/h (460  400 kn). The full-size version would have had a wingspan of 50 ft (15 m), a fuselage length of 44 ft (13 m), and weigh 12,000 lb (5,400 kg). The demonstrator would be powered by one or two
engines, but a production version would be powered by an all-electric drive.
The design, development and integration phase is expected to last 18- Phase Two will allow companies to mature their designs.
On 3 March 2016, DARPA awarded Aurora Flight Sciences $89.4 million to build and demonstrate their LightningStrike concept, beating out the other three competitors. The LightningStrike is a tilting-wing design powered by one
engine, the same type used on the V-22 Osprey, that generates electric power via three
generators to run 24 distributed ducted fans, three each in the forward
and 18 across the main wing. Rather than using conventional engines like all the other entrants, the aircraft relies on "distributed electric propulsion," where the three generators that produce three megawatts (4,023 ) of electricity, as much as a commercial , power individual motors each wing fan uses a 100 kW motor, and each canard fan a 70 kW motor. The air vehicle will weigh between 10,000–12,000 lb (4,500–5,400 kg), about the size of a , and cruise faster than 300 knots, 50 knots faster than the V-22. Phase II of the VTOL X-Plane project will fabricate two air vehicles before flight testing, planned by September 2018. A 20 percent-scale demonstrator, weighing 325 lb (147 kg) using wings and canards made of carbon composites and
plastics, was flown on 29 March 2016. The full-scale aircraft will be designated the .
Phase Three will last 12-months from February 2017 to February 2018 and will constitute ground and flight tests of the experimental designs.
