Celebrate Rosh Hashana, the Jewish holiday celebrating the day Hasheem created the first humans---Adam and Khava, or Eve. The holiday lasts two days and marks the Jewish new year. The holiday is traditionally celebrated with sweet foods such as honey and apples as well as baked challahs---a sweet bread often decorated with raisins. Incorporate a variety of creative crafts for kids to celebrate Rosh Hashana.
Cut an apple in half---leave the stem and seeds in place. Pour a small amount of craft paint onto a paper plate. Use traditional colors of red or green or add metallic sparkle with gold or silver paint. Brush the paint onto the cut apple using a foam sponge brush. Stamp the front of a blank cardboard greeting card or piece of cardstock folded in half. Write the words "L'Shanah Tovah Tikatevuh" which translates into "may you be written in for a good year." Use a calligraphy pen or metallic paint pen for added decoration.
Use two pairs of pantyhouse or stockings. Cut off one leg from one pair. Stuff the other three legs with cotton balls or fabric stuffing until firm and full. Braid the three legs together. Use a hot glue gun to create a challah. Form a circle with the braided stocking. Add glue where needed to form the "ball of dough." Add buttons, felt circles or magic marker to represent raisins.
Draw a grid on a blank piece of paper using a marker and ruler. Create a grid with 35 boxes, seven squares horizontally and five squares vertically. Create the grid on a computer for even spacing. Make 12 copies of the grid. Add each month---with the Jewish name at the top left and the English at the top right. Add Jewish holidays on the appropriate dates. Have children draw pictures and sketches for each holiday. Hole punch the top of the paper and add brackets to keep the papers together.

High Holiday Services and Family Activities
We are looking forward to the coming High Holidays, which begin with Erev Rosh HaShanah (and champagne and honey cake) on September 20. It is our tradition to not charge for tickets to our High Holiday services, which are led by Rabbi Mordecai Miller and Cantor Yael Krieger. We would, however, appreciate your contacting the office to have complimentary tickets sent to you, or to arrange to pick them up when you come in. We do need to charge and request RSVPs for our pre-Yom Kippur and Break-fast post-Yom Kippur dinners. We keep those prices as low as possible, and have subsidies available if needed. Donations are, of course, enormously appreciated, and help us to keep doing this. Family High Holiday services on the first day of Rosh HaShanah and on Yom Kippur are from 10 a.m. until noon. Holiday Packets have been mailed to members. That information is also available online:

Shabbat Dinner & Services
On the first Friday of the month evening Shabbat services are from 6:00-6:30 pm followed by dinner at 6:30. After dinner will be a speaker, special program, music, or just time to relax and visit.
Ahuva Simon Sa’ar has kindly volunteered to prepare our Shabbat Dinner so that we can keep the price for adults at $16. Children age 5 and under are free! $16 for member adults, $8 for children ages 6-17 – with a family maximum of $40. Non-members are $18 per adult, $8 for children ages 6-17, and 5 & under free. To make sure everyone can enjoy a full dinner, we must have your reservation by noon on the Wednesday before the dinner. If you do not have a reservation we may not be able to serve you: 707-360-3000 or office@bethamisr.org On the second through fifth Fridays of the month Kabbalat Services begin at 7:30 pm. Midrash Class with Rabbi Mordecai Miller: Wednesday evenings 7:30 &# p.m. (Rabbi’s Study)
We examine the original text of the Midrash Rabba (the Great Midrash) on Genesis as well as an 18th Century commentary called “Eitz Yoseph”. These provide original insights into the Biblical text. Discussion is encouraged. Bi-weekly schedule.
Doorway to Davening with Rabbi Miller: Thursday evenings 7:30 &# p.m. (Rabbi’s Study). Next Doorways to Davening Class held Thursday October 19.
Parsha of the week class and discussion with Rabbi Miller meeting Tuesday mornings from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Class will be cancelled on those Tuesdays which are actual Yom Tovim.
There is no charge for Rabbi Miller’s classes. Important: If you are interested in attending , please be sure to call Rabbi Miller at 707-889-6905 or email rabbi@bethamisr.org to make sure that the class is being held that evening. Classes are not held on Yom Tovim.

If you need to say Kaddish or memorialize a special event, contact the office at 360-3000 one week in advance, and we will do our best to secure a minyan. The Torah is read Monday and Thursday, if there is a minyan.
