My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around where
we live. Two dog walkers passed by and we heard one of them say,
&Never seen that dog around here before.&
We looked down the hill and saw an old black dog stumbling(蹒跚)
painfully up the hill. We bent down, talked gently to the dog and
patted it. I checked and there was a collar. There was a phone
number on the collar, but no one answered.
The dog was painfully thin. It didn&t have many teeth left and,
well, it just seemed done.
Julie ran home to get some of our dog&s food while I tried to
encourage the dog to come along with me. Julie got home and back
again when I was only half way there. So, we sat down on the
sidewalk while our new friend made short work of the food.
Eventually we got her home. We gave her a blanket, more food,
kept her warm and wondered what to do next.
After trying for many times we got a response from the number. A
lady came around with a bunch of flowers for us. She explained that
Tara had been her father&s dog. She was very old and should
probably be put to sleep, but the lady just couldn&t bring herself
to do it. So, Tara was safely returned home.
Here is the truth of the story:
Actually Julie and I were out that morning because I was
leaving. She was trying to persuade me to come back, but I wasn&t
hearing anything that made that sound likely.
I was about to turn and go when an old, worn out dog walked
between us and collapsed. Suddenly we had something more important
than our problem to worry about. There was a creature
in need right before us and we had to work together to help it.
We did help it. And here am I writing the story in my own home,
in my own family.
In the song &Love Is Not a Fight& Warren Barfield talks about
marriage. At one point he sings, &And if we try to leave, may God
send angels to guard the door.&
Sometimes angels come disguised (伪装) as dogs. (380

You&re jogging at a steady pace, enjoying your favorite music
through your headphones. Your breath is short and your heart is
pumping. Your legs feel like they couldn&t carry you any
And then you hear the groan of a zombie over your right
shoulder. You must run or be eaten.
The zombie apocalypse(大灾难) isn&t upon you. You&re just taking

and interactive game out of your daily workout.
Software developers are taking advantage of Smartphone&s
advanced technology&GPS, accelerometers (加速度计), MP3 players&to
create &immersive& fitness games that appeal to both desperate and
reluctant exercises.
It&s part of an overall trend in the fitness industry toward
making your daily workout &a fun experience rather than something
you have to do,& said Jessica Matthews, an exercise physiologist
for the American Council on Exercise.
&We are attempting more &play& opportunities as opposed to
working out, basically getting people to move and having fun while
they are doing it,& Matthews said.
One popular fitness game app, Zombies, Run! places you in the
role of a supplies runner for a walled community trying to survive
against the walking dead.
During your run, the game&s surprising complex story unfolds
through your headphones. You &pick up& supplies for the community
as you jog along. At certain intervals, you&re warned that zombies
are nearby, and if you don&t pick up the pace, you&ll have to
pitch(掷) some supplies to keep from being caught.
The game doesn&t end once your jog is over. After your workout,
you can use the supplies you picked up during your running to
fortify your community. The GPS statistics from your run are
uploaded automatically to the game&s website, so you can review
your average speed and the estimated calories you burned.
Teemo, Nexercise and Fitocracy all allow you to post your latest
workout to share with friends. Some games have you work with
friends to reach a common goal&completing a relay race, for
example&while others encourage competition.
&That&s another big area, having that social component,&
Matthews said, &Having social support of some kind is a critical

Before throwing yourself into studying, you should make a study
schedule. Creating and following a study schedule can help you
concentrate, better retain course material, and manage your time in
an effective way.
To create a good schedule, first you should assess your current
schedule because creating a healthy balance between your studies,
social life and sleep is important. You can adjust your study
schedule to fit your needs and learning style. For example, do you
need to spare some time on weekend afternoons because you work
nights the same days? Could you listen to an audio recording of a
lecture on your MP3 player while sweating at the gym?
It&s also important to list all the subjects you need to study.
If you have a study guide or a textbook with review sections, use
it to narrow down what you list. Once you have your list, rank the
subjects by how confident you feel about them. You can note them
with least, moderately or mostly. By doing
this, you can focus more time and energy on problem areas. And in
the end, write down which subject you&re studying in each period.
This will allow you to organize your textbooks and study materials
ahead of time.
Once the schedule is created, you must stick to it. There's no
point in making a study schedule if you don't stick to it, but it
can be hard to start. Try to get into the habit of looking at your
calendar/planner on a regular, preferably daily basis. This will
help keep you away from the &out of sight, out of
mind& trap. Once you&ve established a routine, you
may start mentally associating certain acts, such as the opening of
a textbook or sitting down at a desk, with a study mode. In
addition, you should avoid putting off work as much as possible. If
you finish something ahead of schedule, go back and note which
subjects you feel better about and which you still have questions
on. By quickly getting to your studying mindset, you can more
easily ignore distractions and focus on the material you are
reviewing. Accordingly, you can adjust what you plan to study and
review later on. (364 words)

For most of us, it is challenging to climb Mount Everest, the
world&s tallest mountain. However, 80-year-old Yuichiro Miura is
preparing to climb the 29,035 feet peak for the third time in
Unlike others, his love for this great mountain began in 1970,
when he became the first person to ski down the 8,000 meters. His
amazing story was recorded in a documentary called &The Man Who
Skied Down Everest&.
After that he seemed to have gotten a little busy with other
challenges, and it was not until 2003 at the old age of 70, that he
decided to revisit the Everest&this time, to climb up. Not only did
he succeed, but he also broke the record for being the oldest
person ever, to climb the mountain. However, just four years later,
a 71-year-old fellow by the name of Katsusule Yanagisawa managed to
displace him in the record books.
Not one to give up, Yuichiro decided to go at it one more time
at the age of 75. While he succeeded in getting to the peak, he did
not break the record this time. That&s because just a day before he
got there, a 76-year-old Nepalese man by the name of Min Bahadur
Sherchan had managed to get to the top of the mountain. While
Yuichiro says his third attempt has nothing to do with the record
books, if he succeeds, that is where he will end up hopefully.
What&s amazing about this determined man is that he suffers from
and has undergone two operations for irregular heartbeat. So why
does he continue taking on this risky adventure? Because he
believes it to be the &anti-ageing& cure for all his illnesses.
