涨制度源于国外早期证券市场，是证券市场中为了防止交易价格的暴涨暴跌，抑制过度投机现象，对每只证券当天价格的涨跌幅度予以适当限制的一种交易制度，规定了交易价格在一个交易日中的最大波动幅度为前一交易日上下百分之几。即规定当日交易最高价格和格。
中国证券市场现行的涨跌停板制度是日发布，日开始实施的，旨在保护广大投资者利益，保持市场稳定，进一步推进市场的规范化。制度规定，除上市首日之外，股票（含A、）、基金类证券在一个交易日内的交易价格相对上一交易日收格的涨跌幅度不得超过10%，ST、*票不超过5%。超过涨跌限价的委托为无效委托。
此外，权证类的涨停限制为：权证涨幅价格=权证前一日收盘价格+（当日涨幅价格－标的证券前一日收盘价）&125%&比例；权证跌幅价格=权证前一日收盘价格－（标的证券前一日收盘价－标的证券当日跌幅价格）&125%&行权比例。
中国的涨跌停板制度与国外制度的主要区别在于股价达到涨跌停板后，不是完全停止交易，在涨跌停价位或之内价格的交易仍可继续进行，直到当日收市为止。
证券市场中交易当天股价的最高限度称为，涨停板时的股价叫涨停板价。一般说，开市即封涨停的股票，势头较猛，只要当天涨停板不被打开，第二日仍然有上冲动力，突然拉至涨停的股票，庄家有于第二日出货或骗钱的嫌疑，应小心。
中国涨停板的主要作用
为了防止出现过大的非理性变动，防止消息不对称造成格大幅波动，切实保护中小投资者。中国引入期货的价格波动限制。加以改良。给市场充分时间消化特定信息的影响。
涨停的种类有两种
一是一字涨停的，即开盘就涨停，盘中没有被打开过的股票。通常由于重大利好才会出现这样的走势。这样的股票后面涨幅会很大；第二种是开盘没涨停，盘中有大单将股票封住涨停，说明庄家的筹码已近拿够了，这样的股票可以坚持持有。
一般而言，题材股、小市值股票、频繁公告信息而停牌的股票、筹码趋于集中的ST股票更容易涨停。追涨停有几个指标很重要：首先，要了解目标股的，一般在1-2亿的较好；二是关注指数的开盘，如果指数低开，涨停一般比较真实，高开则容易形态不一。然后，要关注涨停一瞬间的封单，再次打开时配合量能变化再介入。最后，要看具体个股前期的形态，如果有大资金进驻应该果断参与
