&Japan's Ito Yokado will shut down another store in Beijing, after three were already closed in the city last year, the Beijing Times newspaper reported on Wednesday. An Ito Yokado store in Youanmen, Beijing's Xicheng district, will be officially closed on April 1, due to "adjustment of company structure," said a post on the company's website. The company was not available for further comment on Wednesday. Experts noted Wednesday that more department stores are expected to be shut down in the future as rising e-commerce is increasingly eating into the business of brick-and-mortar stores. The Youanmen store has been mostly making losses after it was opened in 2007, the Beijing Times reported, citing a staff member of the company. The official also told the newspaper that the Youanmen store will be the last store to be closed in Beijing. The Ito Yokado department store chain in China is jointly operated by Japan's Ito Yokado Co, Itochu Corp and China Huafu Trade and Development Group, and after the close of the Youanmen store, it will still have five stores in Beijing, according to information on its website. "Pressure on department stores mainly comes from the increasing popularity of online marketplaces, which have provided a more convenient and affordable way for shopping," Li Zhiqi, chairman of Beijing Zhiqi Weilai Marketing and Consultancy Co, told the Global Times on Wednesday.Transactions on China's online marketplaces increased by 25 percent year-on-year to 13 trillion yuan ($2.08 trillion) in 2014, accounting for around 50 percent of the country's overall retailing, data from the
showed in January.Ito Yokado is not the only one that was forced to close stores in China. Data from consultancy Real Estate Talents showed that 16 major department store chains, including Ito Yokado, Parkson and Wangfujing Department Store, have closed 26 stores in 2014.UK retailer Marks & Spencer announced on Monday that it would close five stores in its greater Shanghai business region by August. At the same time, the company is increasing its online presence in China. Following the strong sales by a Marks & Spencer clothing store on Alibaba's online marketplace Tmall, the firm launched a kids' wear store on Tmall and another clothing store
in January, it said in the press release on Monday. The decline of traditional department stores is not exclusive to China. US department store chain Macy's closed 22 stores in 2014, but only opened five, the company said in its financial results in February."Besides the competition from e-commerce, the high rent in big cities and the rising labor costs are also hindering their [department store] development," Wang Danqing, a partner at ACME Consultancy in Beijing, told the Global Times on Wednesday.Wang further noted that department stores also face competition from high-end shopping malls, which could provide a better shopping experience with their entertainment facilities like cinemas and fine restaurants. Experts noted that department stores should upgrade their shopping environment and also embrace the e-commerce trend in order to survive amid the cut-throat competition. "For instance, they should try more online promotions or even open their own online stores," Li said. The Beijing Times report also said that Ito Yokado will continue to invest in its existing stores in Beijing and diversify its services. So far, most of the closed stores were in big cities, where competition is fierce and people are more used to shopping online. "But as people in lower-tier cities are also forming the habit of online shopping, department stores will also face tough times there," Wang noted.
