For example, when writing book reports and stories, I use Microsoft word instead of a pen and paper. That way, after my teacher edits my work, I can go back and make revisions without having to rewrite the whole thing. And Microsoft Word has a spell check! I use it all the time. For English class, we’re reading The Outsiders, by S. E. Hinton. As a pre - reading assignment (作业), my teacher asked us to research teenage groups on the internet. I tried Google, Encarta, and Yahoo first, and finally found an article on Time. Com. For a geography assignment on the United States, I used Encarta to learn about the Mississippi River. I needed to find out how deep the river is, how its widths and depths are different, what states it runs through, and what kind of fish live in it. I used the information to show how the geography of a country affects (影响) its economy. For example, the river’s trade paths, the number of fish caught in it , and the tourists it attracts (吸引)directly affect Southemers’ jobs and incomes (收入), Doing that, I had a lot of fun. I never go to the library to do research. It takes too much time, Since I live in New York City and both my parents work, getting to the library isn’t always easy. For a big assignment or8 research project, I’d have to stay at the library to read, or sign out whatever books or magazines I needed. Being able to find the information in my own living room makes everything a lot simpler. Online dictionaries and encyclopedias (百科全书)also save time. Sometimes, I think the computer spoils (宠坏) my generation because it’s so easy - at least physically. But computers are not like television, which does the thinking for you. You still have to use your mind. I prefer using a computer, because it has so many advantages. 1. He was more surprised when the man said that his name was Walter and asked if he could take skydiving lessons. Ron asked Walter how old he was and Walter replied that he was 60. Ron explained to Walter that anyone over 50 had to be checked by a doctor before they could learn to jump from a plane. “I’m afraid you should have thought about that before coming here,” Ron said. “I’m sorry, but I can’t let you start learning without a letter from your doctor.” Walter smiled. “Here’s a letter from my doctor. He made me take lots of tests and he says that I’m fine.” So Walter was able to join the skydiving school. He came to all the lessons and worked very hard, although the other students were much younger than him, mostly about 30. Soon it was time for him to make his first jump. Ron asked him if he was feeling OK. Walter22 replied that he had never felt better. However, he added that there was something he should have told Ron earlier. Ron asked what it was and Walter smiled. Then, just before he jumped, he told Ron that he wasn’t 60. Ron asked how old Walter really was and Walter told him he was 75! Walter’s first jump from a plane was six years ago and yesterday he made his eighteenth jump. “I should have started skydiving a long time ago!” he said. Walter has lots of other hobbies. He enjoys riding fast motorbikes and climbing mountains. Last year he was rescued by a police helicopter in Wales. In those days the people did not really eat chocolate. They used cocoa bean to make a chocolate drink and they enjoyed it very much. Many years later, the cocoa bean was brought to other countries and people came to love the taste of chocolate. In 1824, John Cadbury opened a small shop in Britain. One of the things he sold was chocolate drink. In 1831, he opened a factory to make chocolate drink. He wanted to encourage people to drink chocolate instead of other drinks. A few years later, a man called Joseph Fry found a way to make chocolate bars, and so for the first time people had the chance to eat chocolate instead of only drinking it. But at that time chocolate was very expensive and only the rich people could buy it. Later, as more and more chocolate bars were produced and sold, it become cheaper. However, at first only plain chocolate(a kind of chocolate without milk and with very little sugar) was produced. Milk chocolate came later an this was made by adding milk to the chocolate. The first milk chocolate bar was made in Cadbury’s factory in 1897. Their most famous chocolate, Cadbury’s Milk Bar, was made in 1905. It has been the most popular chocolate in Britain and around the world for over 100 years. The Cadbury is still in Britain and the chocolate produced there is eaten all over the world. Every year, thousands of visitors visit the factory in order to see how chocolate is made. 1.
