撒慕尔记上
撒慕尔记被分为两部分，《撒慕尔记上》和《撒慕尔记下》。这部书之所以这样命名，是因为这部书的主角就是身兼民长与先知重任的撒慕尔，他以自己的声望和天主的命令统治并领导以色列子民。他的主要任务就是为以色列子民选举一位君王，他首先拣选了撒乌尔， 但是撒乌尔后来违背了天主的意愿。最终，撒慕尔为以色列子民推选了“王中之王”达味，是他成为以色列伟大的君主，并成为未来默西亚救世主的预像。
撒慕尔蒙召
3 1小男孩撒慕尔在厄里的照顾下侍奉雅威。在那时期，人们很少听到雅威的话，也没有看到异象。
2一天晚上，厄里躺在他的房间里，老眼昏花已看不清东西。3天主的灯仍然亮着，撒慕尔躺在雅威的圣殿里，靠近天主的盟约之柜。4那时雅威呼唤道：“撒慕尔！撒慕尔！”
撒慕尔回答：
“我在这儿！”
5他跑到厄里那里，对他说：
“我在这儿，你叫我？”
但是厄里说：
“我没有叫你，回去睡觉吧！”
于是撒慕尔回去又躺下了。
6雅威再次呼唤：
“撒慕尔！”
撒慕尔站起来，到厄里那里说：
“你叫我，我在这儿。”
厄里回答说：
“我没有叫你，我的孩子，回去睡吧。”
7撒慕尔还不知道是雅威，雅威的话从没有显示给他。
8但是当雅威第三次呼唤撒慕尔时，他又一次跑去对厄里说：
“你叫了我，我在这儿”，
厄里这时明白了那是雅威正在呼唤这小男孩，9所以他对撒慕尔说：
“你回去躺下，如果他又呼唤你，你回答：雅威请说，你的仆人在倾听。”
10雅威来了，如以前一样呼唤道：
“撒慕尔！撒慕尔！”
撒慕尔回答：
“请讲，你的仆人在倾听。”
11于是雅威告诉撒慕尔：
“你看！我要在以色列做一件事，使每个听见这事的人，都感到害怕。12那一天，我要实践我曾告诉厄里的关于他家族的事，从头到尾都将被验证。13因为我告诉过他我要永远惩罚他的家庭。他自己明白他的儿子亵渎天主，但他没有阻止他们。14这就是我诅咒厄里家庭的原因。任何牺牲品或奉献物都永远不能补赎他们的罪过。”
15撒慕尔躺卧到早晨，一大早起来，打开雅威圣殿的门。撒慕尔很害怕把这景象告诉厄里，16但是厄里叫了他：
“撒慕尔，我的儿子！”
撒慕尔回答：
“我来了。”
17厄里问：
“雅威对你说了什么？不要隐瞒我。如果你少说一句，你会受天主的惩罚并感到害怕。”
18于是撒慕尔便把事情从头到尾告诉他，厄里说：
“他是雅威。让他照他认为好的去做吧！”
19撒慕尔长大了，雅威与他同在，他的话都实现了。20以色列全境，从丹到贝尔舍巴都知道撒慕尔是雅威真正的先知。21雅威继续在史罗显现，他在那里显现给撒慕尔。对于全以色列，撒慕尔的话就是雅威的话。
8 1当撒慕尔年老时，他让他的儿子们治理以色列。2他的长子约厄耳和次子阿彼雅，都在贝尔舍巴治理以色列。3但是他们不像他们的父亲,
他们享用既得的利益,
颠倒黑白。
4因此，以色列所有的长老集合起来到辣玛见撒慕尔。5他们对他说：
“你已经老了，而你的儿子不照你的方式治理国家。请赐给我们一个君王治理我们，像其他的国家一样。”
6撒慕尔非常不高兴，因为他们说了
“赐给我们一个君王治理我们”
。他向雅威祈祷，7雅威告诉他：

“看！这些将是你们君王的权利：他要征召你们的儿子，指派他们去当他的车夫、马夫，叫他们在他的车前奔走。12他会指派一些人当统帅，带领一千多、一百多或五十多名士兵。其他的人要为他耕种田地，为他收割庄稼，为他制造武器，为他装备战车。13他还要带走你们的女儿，去替他配制香水、烹调和烘烤食物。14他要拿走你们的田庄里、葡萄园里和橄榄园里最好的产物，送给他的部下。15他会征收你们谷物和葡萄园产物的十分之一，送给他的臣仆。16他要带走你们的男仆、女仆和最好的牛、驴，替他干活。17他要征收你们十分之一的羊群，而你们自己也要成为他的奴隶。18当这一切发生的时候，你们将因自己选择了这样的国王而哭喊。但是到那时，雅威不会再理你们。”
19人们根本不听撒慕尔的话。他们坚持要求：
“不！我们要一个国王治理我们，就像其他任何国家那样。20我们的国王将统领我们，在我们打仗时，走到队伍前列。”
21撒慕尔听了百姓的话，就转告给雅威。22但是雅威对他说：
“你听从他们，赐给他们一个君王。”
