Or How Antipsychiatry Groups are Wrong
If you’ve been reading my
for a while, you’ve probably gathered that
These groups are often under the “mad pride” flag or “psychiatric survivors” or people for “human rights” or people fighting psychiatric abuses. Often the language they use is solely designed to convince you that
psychiatry should be stopped, no one should take psychiatric medication and in many cases, psychology is also evil. Many antipsychiatry groups are sneaky. Antipsychiatry groups sounds reasonable on first glance but it’s only once you dig into them that you see how insidious they are.
Antipsychiatry groups are ridiculous.
I’ve tried to look into antipsychiatry groups to see if there’s something worth understanding but they have no evidence. Just ardent supporters that make wild claims without proof. And their tactics of cruel, personal, abusive attacks are not worth my time. It assures that their groups have no credibility whatsoever.
I Fight Antipsychiatry Groups
And sometimes I spend entire days fighting antipsychiatry people. Antipsychiatry shows up on the
antipsychiatry , antipsychiatry , antipsychiatry shows up on
And these charming antipsychiatry folks, for whatever reason, read all about me and then use those personal details to ensure their personal attacked will be as nasty as possible.
Yes, antipsychiatry groups are ridiculous.
Who has Time to Scientifically Refute Every Cockamamie Antipsychiatry Argument?
I don’t have time to research every one of their outragous claims and make cogent counter-arguments. Because it’s endless. It can always be done but it’s more work than I have time for.
Myths About Psychiatry by Nada Logan Stotland M. D. – Huffington Post
Luckily for me and for you,
I’ve ever read. (She doesn’t say she’s anti-antipsychiatry, but this piece is certainly a shot across the bow of antipsychiatry.)
Psychiatry Myths Dispelled by a Doctor
Aren’t mental health diagnoses randomly added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and applied to individuals?
When deciding what to include in the DSM, “. . . specialists have to look at the evidence and then make judgments about the criteria for medical diagnoses. The difference between a benign tumor and a cancer is a matter of how many sick cells appear under the microscope. “
“Differentiating them [psychiatric disorders] from normal is no different than deciding what level of blood pressure is ‘hypertension,’ how many pounds add up to ‘obesity,’. . . A condition rises to the level of disease when it handicaps a person, is associated with bad outcomes, and/or can be treated — in psychiatry just as in the rest of medicine.”
We don’t understand mental illness the way we understand other illnesses.
“We all know that diabetes is caused by the failure of the pancreas to secrete normal amounts of insulin. But what causes that? We say it’s an autoimmune condition — the body attacks its own insulin-secreting cells. Why does that happen? We don’t know.”
And, of course, we treat diabetes in spite of this lack of knowledge just like we treat mental illness.
Psychiatry illnesses aren’t real, don’t exist, because there are no diagnostic tests for mental illness.
“The substrate, the physical location, of thought, mood, and behavior, is the brain. That’s not a part of the body we like to biopsy without an extremely good reason . . . Using brain scans, however, we now can distinguish between the brain of a person with depression and a person who is not depressed — and make many, many other such observations.”
This is something antipsychiatry groups bring up all the time. But as Dr. Stotland points out, we can
In fact, there are many illnesses that show on brain scans (and sometimes ) but it is early days and brain scans aren’t the kind of thing people can afford (or necessarily even get access to).
Don’t psychiatrists have a vested interest in making everyone “sick” so they can make more money?
“There is a shortage of psychiatrists. I don’t know any psychiatrists with time on their hands. Our incomes are at the lower end of the medical totem pole, along with family medicine and pediatrics . . .”
No one is saying they don’t make oodles of money, they do. But the notion they are not trying to help people and they are trying to create more patients is ludicrous. It takes months to see my psychiatrist because he’s so busy. He doesn’t need any more sick people. Not to mention the fact that in Canada, many profit motivation arguments just don’t hold a lot of water.
There is no science behind psychiatry.
“The New England Journal of Medicine some years ago published a paper demonstrating that far fewer than half the treatments used for cardiovascular diseases are supported by good scientific evidence. Psychiatric treatments work about as well as other medical treatments.”
I’m kind of shocked about cardiovascular disease, but if you think about it, they are in the same position. They are trying to save people’s lives, just like psychiatry is, in the best way they know how.
Please read
The Motives of Doctors, Psychiatrists and Psychologists
And as many problems as I have with psychiatry, psychiatrists, doctors and psychiatric medication, I believe that psychiatrists are trying to help. They’re not always successful, but their
and it’s not money – it’s making people better.

Latest update :
Kiev accused pro-Russian separatists of violating a Europe-backed ceasefire after the rebels said Tuesday that they had seized most of the key railway hub of Debaltseve, the focus of days of fighting with Ukrainian troops.
The Ukrainian presidential office on Tuesday called on the European Union and NATO to condemn the Russia-backed rebels for violating the cease-fire after the rebels claimed to have taken the key transportation hub of Debaltseve.
Russian news agencies quoted Valery Chaly, chief of the Ukrainian presidential administration, as saying that Kiev wants the EU and NATO to &resolutely condemn& the separatists for violating the deals brokered by European leaders last week.
Rebel commander Vladimir Kononov said on Russian television that most of Debaltseve was under separatist control and urged the Ukrainian troops to surrender.
&Their only choice is to leave behind weaponry, lay down arms and surrender,& he said.
Speaking while on a state visit to Hungry on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the rebels should allow Ukranian government forces safe passage out of the encircled town of Debaltseve and that Kiev should allow its troops to lay down their weapons.
The rebels' announcement came after fierce fighting focused on Debaltseve, a government-held town surrounded by rebel forces that both sides claim to be on their side of the ceasefire line. The issue was not resolved under a ceasefire agreement negotiated last week by the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France.
Associated Press reporters saw artillery rounds fired Tuesday from Ukrainian government positions at rebel positions around Debaltseve. Sustained shelling was heard in the area all morning, some coming from Grad rocket launchers.
Ukrainian military spokesman Andriy Lysenko told reporters that the separatists continued to attack government positions overnight around Debaltseve and that the pull-out hinged on the ceasefire being fully observed. He said at least five troops were killed and nine injured in the past 24 hours in the war zone.
The war in eastern Ukraine has already killed more than 5,600 people and displaced more than a million, the United Nations said on Monday. It has also left the country&s industrial heartland in ruins.
Pull-out deadline passes
Under the ceasefire agreement, a Tuesday deadline was set for both sides to begin pulling back weaponry from the front line.
At least one separatist leader claimed that his troops had begun to withdraw their heavy weapons. A rebel military official, Eduard Basurin, announced in a televised briefing that they &will take the initiative& and begin to pull back heavy weaponry from the front.
The Ukrainian government, however, insisted on a comprehensive ceasefire before pulling back its weaponry.
The ceasefire deal, which was brokered by European leaders last week and went into effect early Sunday, specified that the pull-out should begin on the second day after the parties stop fighting.
This condition has not been met, Lysenko said. &As soon as the fire ceases ... we will be ready to begin the withdrawal,& he said.
Fighting has stopped or subsided in some parts of war-torn eastern Ukraine, however. Basurin said Tuesday the separatists had not seen any violations of the ceasefire in the area around the rebel stronghold of Donetsk since 8pm local time on Monday.
Rupert Colville, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, told a briefing in Geneva on Tuesday that the UN is &alarmed& by reports of continued shelling.
&It is unclear how many civilians are still there,& he said. &We are particularly concerned about the civilians trapped in the area & we believe there may be a few thousand hiding in cellars, struggling to get food, water and other basic necessities.&
Another rebel leader also claimed to be starting a withdrawal.
&I was at the front line last night, and our tanks, our artillery were pulling back,& Igor Plotnitsky, the leader of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People&s Republic, northeast of Debaltseve, was quoted as saying by the Russian news agency Tass.
He added that he &expects the same from Ukraine&.
Due to security issues, his claims could not be immediately verified.
Lysenko said the Ukrainian troops &have not noticed any such actions& on the ground.
The separatists were expected to discuss the withdrawal of the weaponry later Tuesday with representatives of Ukraine, Russia and the group charged with monitoring the cease-fire, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
In a phone call late on Monday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko appealed to Putin to use his influence on the separatists to ensure that they stop the fighting.
Merkel&s office reported that the three leaders agreed on &concrete steps to enable an observation& of the situation in Debaltseve by the OSCE.
OSCE representatives could not get to Debaltseve on Monday because of the heavy fighting there.

The fighting against youth smoking
Since I took office I’ve done everything in my power to protect our children from harm. We’ve worked to make their streets and their schools safer, to give them something positive to do after school and before their parents get home. We’ve worked to teach our children that drugs are dangerous, illegal and wrong.
Today, I want to talk to you about the historic opportunity we now have to protect our nation’s children from an even more deadly threat:smoking.Smoking kills more people every day than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, murders, suicides, drugs and fires combined.Nearly 90 percent of those smokers lit their first cigarette before they turned 18.Consider this:3, 000 children start to smoke every day illegally, and 1, 000 of them will die sooner because of it.
This is a national tragedy that every American should be honor-bound to help prevent. For more than five years we’ve worked to stop our children from smoking before they start, launching a nationwide campaign to educate them about the dangers of smoking, to reduce their access to tobacco products, and to severely restrict tobacco companies from advertising to young people. If we do these, we’ll cut teen smoking by almost half over the next five years. That means if we act now, we have it in our power to stop 3 million children from smoking and to save a million lives as a result.
What has the author done in his power?
To look after our children.
To clean the street.
To teach our children.
To protect our children from harm.
Compared with other disasters, what kills more people everyday?
Car accidents.
How many children start to smoke everyday illegally?
For more than five years what have they done to stop their children from smoking?
To educate them about the dangers of smoking.
To reduce their access to tobacco products.
To restrict tobacco companies from advertising to young people.
Above of all.
