There is one essay question for the Class of 2018:
It's the first day of class at HBS. You are in Aldrich Hall meeting your &section.& This is the group of 90 classmates who will become your close companions in the first-year MBA classroom. This is what we mean when we’ve been encouraging you to use your own “voice” when approaching this part of the application.&&We have no pre-conceived ideas of what “good” looks like. We look forward to lots of variance.o It’s useful. You will actually be introducing yourself to classmates at HBS.
Why did we drop the “optional” option?
o We were trying to signal that the essay wasn’t The Most Important Element of the application so we thought saying “optional” might accomplish that. But, this season, every applicant submitted a response. We get it. You want to tell us things.
Tell us again what the essay is for?o For you: an opportunity to pause and reflect. Business school is a big experience -&&it’s exciting, it’s an unknown, it’s a beginning, it’s an investment in your future. Stopping to reflect and gather your thoughts in writing is a useful exercise. That’s not just our opinion -&&it’s what we hear from students all the time.o For us: a chance to get to know you beyond the elements of the application that feel fixed and stationary. Can also be a starting point for interview conversations.

　　哈佛商学院(HBS)，美国商学院三大巨头之一，也是世界上最好的商学院之一。申请HBS不仅要求超高的成绩、完美的简历或推荐信、优秀的课外活动、工作经历，文书也是影响申请成败的重要影响因素，在申请者自身实力相当的时候，文书能够打动招生官更是可以直接决定录取结果。
　　作为研究院，哈佛商学院在录取时的文书题目比本科申请题目还要宽泛、还要考验写作功底。
　　2013年，哈佛商学院文书的题目如下：
　　You're applying to Harvard Business School. We can see your resume, school
transcripts, extra-curricular activities, awards, post-MBA career goals, test
scores and what your recommenders have to say about you. What else would you
like us to know as we consider your candidacy? (No word limit)
　　你正在申请哈佛商学院。我们可以看到你的简历、学校成绩单、课外活动、奖项、工商管理硕士职业目标、考试分数和你的推荐者所说的关于你的事。那么，作为候选人，你还有什么是希望我们知道的?(无字数限制)

　　What else would I like you to know?
　　I am who I am today mostly because of my brother [name]. [name] was born
when I was four years old, and he had an extremely rare birth defect called
Robert's Syndrome. At the time, he was one of a handful in the world to have it.
He was born without arms, couldn't walk or talk, and had many other severe
physical and mental defects. It was a complete shock to my parents. He was only
expected to live for a day or two, but after a few weeks in the hospital he was
healthy enough to come home with us. I was too young to really understan I was just excited to have a brother.
　　[name] was a full-time job for us. For his entire life he was incapable of
doing anything for himself. My parents and I didn't have much, but we did have
an amazing family and group of friends to support us. We couldn't have taken
care of [name] without all of them, and seeing this level of sacrifice from so
many people had a huge impact on me. No one ever complained. No one ever
hesitated. We just did what we had to, and I saw first-hand at a young age how
important it is to work together and help those around you. And our family
(extended included), became so much closer because of how we came together for
[name], and that closeness still holds today.
　　[name] ended up living for about four years, and I'm so grateful for the
lessons I learned from him. My generosity, kindness, team work, and
independence, come directly from him being in my life. And learning to deal with
that level of stress and responsibility made me a much, much stronger person
than I would have been without.
　　So my family and I have carried [name]'s memory with us since he passed in
the form of giving to others. About ten years ago, we started a charity called
[institution], whose purpose is to supply beds and bedding to children in our
area who are without. The thought was that [name] spent most of his life in bed,
and if we hadn't had a decent one for him his life would have been so
uncomfortable. As of this year, we have supplied almost [number] kids with
mattresses, blankets, and stuffed animals, and each year we are able to help
more and more children.
　　This mentality of service has been a big part of my life since we started
[institution], and as I got older I wanted to start branching out to new service
opportunities. And let me tell you, [city] has been a great place to start. This
city has made a serious impression on me. Anyone who's from here either loves it
or hates it, but either way, [city] is the kind of place that defines a person.
[city] is the underdog, full of unrealized potential. Living in a place like
this has opened my eyes to the heartache of missed opportunities (not even
mentioning our sports teams&), and it's because of this that I've become so
involved in the community. I've been able to work with so many very smart,
driven people, and together we've done a lot to make a positive impact. My work
with the [institution] has allowed me to help raise over [number] for small,
local NFPs, and my work with the [institution] has complemented that with a more
hands-on, service based focus. And being a Big Brother through [institution] has
allowed me to make a lasting, consistent impact in a more focused way.
　　All of these, together with working for a commercial bank, have given me a
very satisfying life balance. I'm able to do so many things, and able to make a
tangible impact in each of them. But sometimes I do so much that I don't take
the time to stop and look around & to process what's happening. This was missing
in my life. I know that the path I'd been taking was the right one for me, I'd
just never truly felt ready to move on to the next phase.
　　This changed this past summer when I did my first [event]. If you're not
familiar with this, it's a [number] mile swim followed by a [number] mile bike
and then a [number] mile run. Still seems nuts to me. I'd never done a triathlon
of any kind before I signed up for this, but was so overwhelmed by watching my
friend compete in the same one the year before. I'll never forget the moment: I
was watching a quadriplegic go up the final & and largest & hill in his
wheelchair, sweating, grunting, and crying. And finishing. I'm pretty sure
everyone watc it was one of the most moving things I'd ever
seen. So I signed up.
　　Training for this requires a serious amount of time, most of which you're
alone with your thoughts (no music allowed during the race, so you train
without). Eight hours biking, five running, and two swimming, each week for
seven months, is so mentally taxing, and your mind goes to some new places. I
started reflecting a lot, and really began to understand the choices I've made
and the impact they've had. I thought a lot about where I was in life, why I was
there, and what I would have done differently along the way. I thought about
what I wanted for my future, not just career-wise, but in order to be happy. And
it's not so much that my views changed from this experience, but I feel like
I've gained a new level of clarity. I'm much more confident in my life goals,
and can pursue them with pride and conviction.
　　I'm now ready to move on to the next phase of my life, and am very excited

　　美国大学申请尤重essay。曾经的哈佛商学院（HBS），需要申请者提交4篇essay（自2011年起改为2篇）。一般的Essay题目包括：你能为这所大学带来什么？最令你印象深刻的一件事是什么，对你的人生造成了什么样的影响的等。不同学校对Essay的风格要求不一样，MIT，芝加哥大学等学校偏爱严谨，而同为美国名校的西北大学则偏好更轻松一点的文风。本文中留学专家为学子们做详细介绍。
　　这里有一个关于哈佛大学的essay题目：
　　1. Tell us about three of your accomplishments.（600 words）
　　这个题目几乎已经成为了哈佛大学的标志性论题。通过这个题目，对方会了解你的很多方面，你可以在这里通过三个故事把你的成就很好的呈现在对方面前。做essay之前，先不要急于下手，仔细考虑你人生的每一个阶段，就像放电影似的；找出影响你人生重要的转折点的故事，大概20-30个，然后根据题目进行有效的提取和筛选，最终选择2-3个放在其中；那么，根据这篇essay题目，我们可以总结以下几点引起注意：
　　A. essay内容达到平衡；对于职场人员而言，成就可以是多方面的，包括你的个人成就、事业上的成就和家庭成就。当然，既然只有3件，一定要选取最具有代表性的故事才可以抓住对方的眼球；
　　B. essay风格：有些essay像写小说，惊心动魄；有些essay则要保持严谨；这个一方面要根据所申请院校的实际情况决定，另一方面就是自身的语言功底，好的essay会给对方眼前一亮的感觉，也会给你的offer加分。
　　C. essay字数。一般情况下，essay字数不能超过规定字数要求的10%。
　　下面是2012年美国通用大学申请表（common application）、Universal application以及哈佛大学补充申请表的essay题目，读者可于此一览essay之大概：
　　2012年美国通用大学申请表essay
　　1.Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.（阐述你人生中的某件重要事情及其对你的影响。）
　　2.Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.（就当前某个事件（你周边的、当地的、国家的乃至国际的事情）发表你的看法。）
　　3.Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.（描述一个于你十分重要的人及其对你的影响。）
　　4.Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work （as in art, music, science, etc.） that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.（描述某个对你影响至深的小说/历史/艺术人物及为什么。）
　　5.A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.（个人特长及背景等的描述以及你能为这所大学带来什么不一样的东西，或者说，大学能为你带来什么不一样的东西。）
　　6.Topic of your choice.（或自选话题）
　　2012年Universal application的essay则为一篇个人陈述：
　　Please write an essay （500 words or fewer） that demonstrates your ability to develop and communicate your thoughts. Some ideas include: a person you admire； a life-changing experience； or your viewpoint on a particular current event. Please attach your response to the end of your application.（写一篇500字左右的个人陈述。内容可包括：一个你尊敬的人，一次改变你命运的时间，或者你对当前某特定事件的看法等。）
　　2012年哈佛大学补充申请表（supplement application）essay：
　　1.Unusual circumstance in your life（你生命中不同寻常的事件）
　　2.Travel or living experience in other countries（海外旅行或者居住体验）
　　3.Books that most affected you（对你影响最大的一本书）
　　4.An academic experience（course，Project，paper or research topic）that has meant most to you（对你而言最为重要的一次学术经历（课程、项目、论文或研究方向）
　　5.A list of books you have read during the past twelve months（你最近12个月里读过的所有书籍清单）
