国家食品安全检测实验室（山东）是国际化、专业化、品牌化的国家级重点实验室，肩负着青岛地区乃至山东出入境食品、农产品的法定检测工作，同时面向社会，提供委托检验、咨询、培训、能力验证、测量审核以及其他与实验室技术和管理相关的各种技术和信息服务。
该重点实验室严格按照ISO/IEC 17025建立了完善的管理体系并有效运行，通过了中国国家认证认可监督管理委员会（CNCA）的计量认证和食品检验机构资质认定，是中国合格评定国家认可委员会（CNAS）认可的检测实验室、能力验证提供者和测量审核提供机构，是韩国食药厅认可的“国外公认检测机构”，是国际官定分析检测协会（AOAC）中国区办公地。
该重点实验室被批准为国家科委国家级科技成果检测鉴定实验室，获得了消费争议处理实验室的资格、有机食品检测机构资质和2008年北京奥运会食品检测资质；拥有国家质检总局指定的国家生物毒素检测基准实验室、国家质检总局指定的动物源性食品重金属检测基准实验室、国家质检总局指定的植物源残留监控（除草剂）检测基准实验室、国家质检总局指定的动物源性食品兽药残留检测基准实验室，拥有2个与国际接轨的生物安全II级实验室。
联合国粮农组织（FAO）等国际权威机构多次来该重点实验室进行技术交流和考察，与欧盟、美国、英国等国家的官方检测机构、著名实验室有深层次的技术协作与交流，与英国FERA、美国3m、美国VICAM、新加坡Romer、瑞士SQTS、美国肯塔基大学、波兰国家兽医研究院等机构的技术机构建立了技术合作与交流关系，与中国海洋大学、南京农业大学、青岛农业大学以及哈尔滨兽医研究所建立了检学研合作实验室，是中国海洋大学、青岛农业大学、青岛科技大学的研究生培养基地。
该重点实验室现有专职食品检验人员74人，兼职食品检验人员26人，高级职称22人，博士19人，硕士42人，国际食品微生物标准委员会(ICMSF)中国分委会观察员1人，AOAC中国区主席/AOAC化学污染物委员会决策层成员/AOAC生物毒素委员会决策层成员1人；拥有气相色谱仪、液相色谱仪、液质联用仪、等离子体发射光谱仪、X射线荧光分析仪、全自动微生物分析系统、微生物快速筛选系统、全自动螺旋细菌计数系统、超低温冰箱、定性及定量PCR仪、生物传感器、病理切片系统、焦磷酸测序仪、基因芯片系统、蛋白质纯化系统、超速离心机、万能显微镜等大型检测仪器及其相应的辅助设备800余台套，总价值近7000余万元，实验室面积8000多平方米。
该重点实验室秉持“以每次检测准确公正为基础，以技术领先和人才专业为保障，依靠持续改进，创建国际一流，稳定地为客户提供优质高效的检测服务和技术领先的能力验证计划”的质量方针，以及“依据明确，样品可靠，设备正常，工作规范，检验快速，数据准确，证单齐全”的工作原则，开展食品、农产品中重金属、食品添加剂、品质、水质、营养标签、农药残留、兽药残留、致病性微生物、生物毒素、转基因成分等的检测业务。年均业务量为63000多批次110000多个样品320000项次。CNAS认可的43大类（包括食品、农产品、化妆品、卫生用品、饲料等）600多个检测项目。
