My experience with Mandarin Chinese is very limited. Though I did spend five weeks in China teaching English, it was 12 years ago and my students were far better at learning English than I was at learning Mandarin.
Monki Chinese Class is a perfect app for me as a beginner, along with others who need or want to learn to write Chinese characters. It’s similar to staff favorite , but with added interactions capitalizing on the very visual nature of Chinese characters.
The app’s interface is very well designed, with nearly every feature I like in an app. There’s a locked parent section, which opens a webpage with good information about the app and how to use it, including some suggestions on how to interact with your child.
The settings section, accessible on the home page, includes a mute button for the sound, a speed control for the tracing, and the ability to reset all progress. This area is not locked, though, so note that kids can easily reset all progress.
The actual game screen is bright and appealing, showing 12 different characters per screen. Tap the desired character to begin the tracing. As the character is drawn, the Chinese word is spoken. It’s also written in Pinyin, and the word can be tapped at any time to hear the pronunciation again.
Each letter has three levels for tracing, just like in LetterSchool. The first level provides arrows over the guidelines. The second level seems similar, but the guidelines are faded, and the user must trace faster in order to complete (with the speed determined from the settings page). The most difficult third level removes the guidelines, keeping just the starting arrow and the end dot for each line.
I like that each level shows the character being written before the user attempts to trace. This provides good visual support. However, I thought the app needed one additional level: the user is not allowed to vary from the tracing path, even in level three. It would be nice to have another level where the user’s line might deviate slightly from the perfect path.
The best part of the app comes when all three levels are completed. Each character is animated and interactive in a way that helps the user remember what the character means. The character for “mountain” turns into a mountain range, while the character for “tree” turns into a pine tree (and tapping it causes needles to fall).
There are 12 characters in Monki Chinese Class available for free, while an additional 12 are available for an in-app purchase of $1.99. However, the developer also has provided two additional ways to get the in-app purchase for free: leave a review on the App Store, or like the developer on Facebook. With these options, the app is essentially free! And even if one isn’t in the mood to write a review, $1.99 for 24 letters is in line with what I expect from good English alphabet apps.
There were only a few things I’d like to see changed. First, though I appreciate the mute button, it needs to be available on the character choice screens as well. It’s a bit of a pain to have to flip back to the home page every time I want to turn the sounds off momentarily.
Also, the app really needs some sort of game to match the character to the animation. It’s such a great way to help learn the characters — a matching game would help learners identify the character out of context.
Overall, this app is fun to use, very well designed and a great way to learn how to write some Mandarin Chinese characters. It’s also a fun option for targeting visual-spatial skills and fine motor skills for all kids, even those who aren’t learning Chinese. This is a Top Pick app, the best of the best for apps working on writing Chinese characters.
