J: Hi I'm Jody and welcome to American Cafe!
J: That's right, Yang Chen, it's Valentine's Day. So we left the cafe. We came out on the street to find out what people are buying for Valentine's Day!
J: And Yang Chen, we've come to the perfect place, Chocolate Chocolate. And you, Yang Chen, I know something about the name Chocolate Chocolate. The chocolate is so good they have to say it twice
J: Of course, women love chocolate. Men like to send their sweethearts all kind of good stuff, diamonds and flowers and chocolate.
J: That's a great idea. But first let's talk to..., oh, let's talk to this guy! Are these chocolates for you?
Man: No, actually one's for my fianc&e and one's for my mom.
Yang Chen: That's so sweet!
Jody: So, we were just saying that Valentine's Day is not only to show your love for a special someone but also family and friends. Is that true?
Man: Yes it is. Women like chocolate anytime, next to diamonds.
Jody: You know, there's a diamond store right up the road.
Man: All right, I passed that one on the way. So...
J: What else for Valentine's Day are popular traditions when you guys plan to do?
Man: Probably dinner, roses, maybe some perfume.
J: Oh, look, there's another guy. I bet he's buying chocolate for his girlfriend.
J: We are in front of Victoria's Secret store and the window is full of sexy red underwear just for Valentine's Day!
That's not for me.
J: So, traditional gifts for Valentine's Day include chocolate, sexy underwear, and also flowers.
Jody: First your name and why you chose to buy roses for your lovely wife on Valentine's Day.
实录1 David: Okay, my name is David Pollack and I like to buy the roses for my wife 'cause Valentine's Day it's a sentimental value for her to know that I love her and show some appreciation.
J: Literally, &Lover's Day.&
J: Exactly. Valentine's Day is not just for lovers. Children show their love for their parents. Friends can show their love for each other. So, it's a time of the year to show your feelings, I guess.
J: You think the name should be changed to something like &Love Day.&
Y: 爱心节!
J: 爱心节!Okay, so we've gone to the flower guy, we've gone to the sexy underwear store, we've gone to the chocolate store. What else is there for Valentine's Day?
Y: Diamonds!
J: There's a diamond store?! Let's go!
(Enter sound of running)
Jody: We are here in a diamond store in Washington, D.C. What are your comments about Valentine's Day and its relationship to diamonds in general?
实录2 Mervis: Diamond symbolizes love because for many, many centuries it has always been a tradition of longevity and because demand is pretty much the hardest gem it has a stigma that it lasts forever, which it does. And men and women have always been attracted to its sparkle and brilliance and beauty.
Jody: Yeh, if you have sweetheart what do you plan to do this Valentine's Day.
实录3 Mervis: Well, I have more than just a sweetheart. I have a very beautiful wife and three kids. And believe me, my wife is going be spoiled rotten on this Valentine. I shouldn't be saying this in case she hears and I'll let the cat out of the bag. And I speak a large pair of diamond studs for her ears. And...yeh....
(laughter)
J: Diamonds are a girls' best friends.
Y: Jody,
J: Oh, today is so fun! I love hearing what people are doing for Valentine's Day! Thank you for you joining us outside in D.C. visiting all the places where people are buying traditional Valentine's Day gifts. That's all the time we have on American Cafe! See you next time.
J: Free samples? Let's go back now! We're so silly.

Words Of Valentine#39;s Day 情人节英语用语
The Legends Of Valentine#39;s Day
February 14 is Valentine#39;s Day.It is celebrated as a lovers#39; holiday today, with the giving of candy, flowers,or other gifts between couples in love.Valentine#39;s Day has roots in several different legends that have found their way to us through the ages.
In Rome it#39;s said that it originated in 5th Century as a tribute to St.Valentine,a Catholic bishop.
For eight hundred years prior to the establishment of Valentine#39;s Day,the Romans had practiced a pagan celebration in mid-February commemorating young men#39;s rite of passage to the god Lupercus. The celebration featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box.The girl assigned to each young man in that manner would be his female companion during the remaining year.
In an effort to do away with the pagan festival.Pope Gelasius ordered a slight change in the lottery.Instead of the names of young women, the box would contain the names of saints. Both men and women were allowed to draw from the box,and the game was to emulate the ways of the saint they drew during the rest of the year.Needless to say, many of the young Roman men were not too pleased with the rule Changes.
Instead of the pagan god Lupercus, the Church looked for a suitable patron saint of love to take his place. They found an appropriate choice in Valentine, who,in AD270 had been beheaded 3 by Emperor Claudius.
Claudius had determined that married men made poor soldiers. So he banned marriage from his empire. But Valentine would secretly marry young men that came to him. When Claudius found out about Valentine,he first tried to convert him to paganism. But Valentine reversed the strategy, trying instead to convert Claudius. When he failed,he was stoned and beheaded.
During the days that Valentine was imprisoned,he fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer. His love for her,and his great faith, managed to miraculously heal her from her blindness before his death. Before he was taken to his death,he signed a farewell message to her,"From your Valentine."The phrase has been used on his day ever since.
Although the lottery for women had been banned by the church, the mid-February holiday in commemoration of St.Valentine was stilled used by Roman men to seek the affection of women. It became a tradition for the men to give the ones they admired handwritten messages of affection, containing Valentine#39;s name.
Another Valentine was an Italian bishop who lived at about the same time,AD 200.He was imprisoned because he secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman emperor. Some legends say he was burned at the stake.
February 14 was also a Roman holiday, held in honor of a goddess.Young men randomly chose the name of a young girl to escort to the festivities. The custom of choosing a sweetheart on this date spread through Europe in the Middle Ages, and then to the early American colonies.Throughout the ages, people also believed that birds picked their mates on February 14!
In AD 496 Saint Pope Gelasius I named February 14 as"Valentine#39;s Day".Although it#39;s not an official holiday, most Americans observe this day.
The first Valentine card grew out of this practice. The first true Valentine card was sent in 1415 by Charles, duke of Orleans,to his wife.He was imprisoned in the Tower of London at the time.
Cupid, another symbol of the holiday, became associated with it because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. He is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and arrow.Cupid often appears on Valentine cards.
Whatever the odd mixture of origins,St.Valentine#39;s Day is now a day for sweethearts. It is the day that you show your friend or loved one tht you care. You can send candy to someone you think is special.Or you can send roses, the flower of love.

Love is in the air
It&s that time of the year when couples show their love for each other by sending cards, flowers and chocolates. But Valentine&s Day is not only about public displays of affection, in recent years it has also become big business.
In the UK alone, more than &20 million is spent on flowers, whilst in the United States over $1 billion is forked out on chocolates.
Although Valentine&s Day has become a global industry with more than 80 million roses sold worldwide, the origins of the day are unclear and hidden in the mists of time. Nobody knows exactly who St Valentine was, although some historians suggest he was a Roman martyred in the third century AD by a Roman Emperor.
It is said that the first recorded Valentine&s card was sent by the imprisoned Duke of Orleans in 1415. It is believed that he sought solace from his confinement by writing love poems to his wife.
Valentine&s Day, or its equivalent, is now celebrated in many countries around the world. However, the traditions often differ from place to place. In Japan, for example, it is customary for the woman to send chocolates to the man, whilst in Korea April 14th is known as &Black Day& and is when the unfortunate men who received nothing on Valentine&s Day gather to eat noodles and commiserate with each other.
Technological developments have also played their part in keeping Valentine&s Day relevant in the 21st century. Valentine&s e-cards have been all the rage in recent years. However, internet security experts urge web users to be wary as malicious hackers could use e-cards to spread viruses and spyware.
Valentine&s cards can also be used for less than romantic purposes. This year police in the UK city of Liverpool sent Valentine&s cards to criminals who failed to appear in court or have not paid fines. The cards contained the verse, &Roses are red, violets are blue, you&ve got a warrant, and we&d love to see you.&
Who says romance is dead?
