New crime prediction software should reduce not only the murder
rate, but the rate of other crimes. Developed by Richard Berk, a
professor at the University of Pennsylvania, the software has
already used in Baltimore and Philadelphia to predict which
individuals on probation(缓刑) or parole(假释) are most likely to murder and to be
“When a person goes on probation or parole he is
supervised(监督) by an officer. The question is ‘what level of
supervision is appropriate?’” said Berk. It used to be that parole
officers used the person’s criminal record, and their judgment to
make decisions.
“This research replaces those seat-of-the &pants
calculations,” he said.
Technology helps determine level of supervision. On average there
is one murder for every 100,000 people. Even among high-risk groups
the murder rate is one in 100. Predicting such a rare event is very
difficult, but advances in computer technology works.
&& Years ago, the
researchers made a dataset of more than 60,000 various crimes.
Using the software they developed, they found some much more likely
to commit murder when paroled or probated. They could identify
eight future murderers out of 100.
Berk’s software examines roughly two dozen
variables(可变因素), from criminal record to geographic location.
The type of crimes, and more importantly, the age at which that
crime was committed, were two of the most predictive
variables.
“People assume that if someone murdered t murder in the future,”
said Berk. “ What really matters is what that person did as a young
individual. Predicting future crimes sounds well. But we aren’t
anywhere near being able to do that.”
&&&“Berk’s
scientific answer leaves policymakers with difficult questions. By
labeling one group of people as high risk, and supervise them
closely, there should be fewer murders, which the potential victims
should be happy about. It also means that those high-risk
individuals will be supervised more aggressively. For human rights
advocates, that means punishing people who, most likely, will not
commit a crime in the future,” said Bushway. “It comes down to a
question of whether you would rather make these errors or those

A woman was walking her dog along a beach in New
Zealand in late June when she saw something that looked like a
white ball in the sand. It turned out to be a young Emperor penguin
that was lost. At his age, he should have been close to Antarctic,

Recently our school is launching an activity to
call for thrift and go against wasting. Every student is
required to save paper, water, electricity and food. All waste
paper must be collected and sold to help the poor students. Water
must be made full use of and now you cannot find any tap
that is left running without students around. And each
student should get into a great habit of turning off the
light on time. What’s more, all of us are called on not to
use our pocket money to buy some things unnecessary and some
students even use their saved money to help the students in

M: Yes. Go

W: That’s

And are you available on weekdays?

M: It’ll be great and I’m
really looking forward to it. It’s such a good chance. Just to have
our own purpose-built factory would make such a difference in
production…
W: I agree that it would be
good to have a completely new building but the Industrial Park
is at least four miles from the centre of town. A lot of our
workers are going to be put off by that.
M: I doubt that. If we were to
offer a bus service at the beginning and the end of every shift, I
think people would like to stay with us.
W: Tony, I have some good news
for our class.
M: Really?
W: Yes, and since you are the
monitor, I thought I should tell you first. We won the class
decoration competition.
M: Wow, that’s good. So what do
we win in return?
W: We win some money. You know
I spoke last week with our class about having a trip after your
exams are over. I was afraid we would not be able to do that
because it might cost too much. Now the school will give part
of the money.

W: Hello. My name is Margaret.
My friend Janet joined your telephone service plan several days
ago. I want to join the same plan.
M: May I know which plan you
are referring to?
W: Actually, she just described
her plan to me. It provides voice mailbox service, which is very
important for me. Being a nurse, sometimes I just can’t
answer the phone when I’m looking after a patient.
M: All the five plans on
your price list provide voice mailbox service.
W: Really? How about
downloading songs?
M: How about Plan C?
W: Just two songs? That’s not
enough. But $10 every month is very attractive. By the way,
I also want the plan to have long distance call service, since my
sister lives in Canada.
M: I’m afraid that you have to
buy an extra service for long distance calls. That’s $5 per
W: OK. Then just help me
apply for Plan C and the long distance call service you were
talking about.
M: In my first year in
university, I decided to take the upper-level Spanish class when my
elementary Spanish class was fresh in my mind. Now, however, I am
paying for my mistake. The Spanish class I am in this year is
taught entirely in Spanish. I don’t even know my professor’s name,
even though she introduced herself to us in the first class. In
addition to not being able to understand anything we are doing
while I’m actually in the class, I also have no idea when
important things like tests are going to happen because the
timetable and textbook, too, are written in Spanish. After the
second class, I tried to talk to the professor, “ I am completely
lost. What should I do?” Through a series of complex hand gestures
combined with rapid-fire Spanish, she managed to tell me that
she would not answer my question unless it was asked in
Spanish. Desperate, I finally said one of the sentences I could
remember from Spanish. The professor laughed. She patted me on the
head, and answered min
in Spanish. I couldn’t follow her at all. Then the professor
finally said one sentence in English, “You’ll be fine. Just give
it a chance. I promise it will all come back to you.” As she
walked out of the room, I just stood there somewhat shocked.
I’ve never had a professor who really didn’t want to help. The only
thing I could think to say was, “What shall I do?”
