Tibet and Nepal Combo Trek: This tour will take you on a spectacular journey from China’s capital, Beijing, to Lhasa, “the roof of the world” and across the Tibetan Plateau, the highest region on earth with an average elevation of 4,900m, to venture up to the northern base camp of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain. The final leg of this journey will take you across the border into Nepal and ends in the country’s capital, Kathmandu. For many, the opportunity to visit Tibet, “the land of snows” and go to the base camp of Mount Everest is a once in a life time opportunity. Tibet exudes an aura of mystery, it boasts spectacular scenery, stunning mountain views, amazing monasteries and warm, welcoming people. This tour starts in Beijing with a day of sightseeing.
From Beijing you will take the overnight train to Lhasa where you will have 2 days to soak up the sights including the iconic Potala Palace and Jokhang temple. From Lhasa you will journey across the Tibetan Plateau, crossing passes over 5,000m to reach the world’s highest monastery – Rongbuk monastery. From here you will take the short journey up to the northern base camp of Everest with breathtaking views across the entire Himalayan range. Your journey will continue down to cross the border into Nepal and ends in Kathmandu where you will finish with a day of sightseeing around its famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
THE ITINERARY
DAY 1: ARRIVE BEIJING
We Tour of Hou Hai and Lou Gu Xiang area. Evening at Wang Fu Jing and dinner at Bagupuyi restaurant. Overnight at hotel in Beijing.
DAY 2: BEIJING – LHASA
Morning sightseeing to the Olympic sites. After this transfer to Beijing West Railway Station to board the train to Lhasa. Overnight train to Lhasa. Dinner will be on the train. Overnight in sleepers cabin.
DAY 3: ARRIVE LHASA (3,490m)
Arrive at Lhasa Railway Station at 16:00. Short drive from the station to hotel in Lhasa. Overnight at hotel in Lhasa.
DAY 4: LHASA
Day of sightseeing around Lhasa which provides the opportunity for acclimatization. Visit Drepung and Sera monasteries-Lhasa’s two great Gelugpa monasteries. Overnight at hotel in Lhasa.
DAY 5: LHASA
Day of sightseeing to the iconic Potala Palace, the winter Palace of the Dalai Lama and symbol of Tibetan B Norbulingka Palace, the traditional summer residence of the Dalai Lama and the Jokhang temple, the most revered religious structure in Tibet where the bustle of worshippers around the temple makes for an equally fascinating and intriguing experience as the temple itself. Overnight at hotel in Lhasa.
DAY 6: LHASA – GANDEN (4,500m) – LHASA&(60km)
Day trip to Ganden monastery which lies 60km east of Lhasa. Ganden monastery is one of Tibet’s greatest monasteries and sits high on a mountaintop above the Lhasa valley. Return to Lhasa. Overnight at hotel in Lhasa.
DAY 7: LHASA – NAMTSO LAKE – TASHI DOR&(260km)
Drive from Lhasa to Namtso lake, meaning “heavenly lake” in Tibetan. The lake is situated 260km northwest of Lhasa. This spectacular high altitude lake sits at 4,720m and covers a vast area of 1,961 square km. It is the largest lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region and the world’s highest lake. From here you can visit the Tashi Dor monastery located at the southeastern corner of the lake. Overnight at guesthouse by Tashi Dor monastery. Please be aware that accommodation is basic and there is no toilet or hot water in the rooms.
DAY 8: NAMTSO LAKE – LHASA&(260km)
&Drive from Namtso lake back to Lhasa. Overnight at hotel in Lhasa.
DAY 9: LHASA – SAMYE MONASTERY– TSETANG (3,600m)(170km)
Drive from Lhasa to the north bank of the Yarlung Tsangpo River to visit Samye monastery-the first monastery to be built in Tibet in the 7th century. From here you will drive on to Tsetang. Overnight at hotel in Tsetang.
DAY 10: TSETANG – GYANTSE (3,950m) (320km)
Drive from Tsetang to Gyantse taking the old road and crossing the Khamba La Pass (4,794m). From here you will have views of the Nojin Kangsang Glacier. Continue on to Gyantse. Overnight at hotel in Gyantse.
DAY 11: GYANTSE – SHIGATSE (3,850m) (90km)
Morning visit to Palkor and Kumbum. Drive from Gyantse to Shigatse which is the second largest city in Tibet. Here you will explore the local market and visit Tashilhunpo monastery – the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama. Overnight at hotel in Shigatse.
DAY 12: SHIGATSE – SAKYA (4,100m) (150km)
Drive from Shigatse to Sakya monastery. Overnight at hotel near Sakya monastery.
DAY 13: SAKYA – RONGBUK MONASTERY (5,000m)&(230km)
Drive from Sakya to Rongbuk monastery along the Friendship Highway. After passing the small town of Lhatse, you cross Gyatmso La Pass (5,220m) – the highest point of the journey. Turning south off the Friendship Highway you cross the Pang La Pass (5,150m) and head towards the Himalayan range with spectacular views all the way from Mount Makalu to Shishapangma. From the pass you can see the Rongbuk valley below and Mount Everest. Overnight at guesthouse near Rongbuk monastery.
DAY 14: RONGBUK MONASTERY – MOUNT EVEREST BASE CAMP (5,150m) – OLD TINGRI (4,370m)&(85km)
8km up from Rongbuk monastery and you will reach the North Everest Base Camp with epic, unparalleled views across the Himalayas. From here you will travel back down to the Friendship Highway and onwards to Old Tingri. Overnight at guesthouse in Old Tingri.
DAY 15: OLD TINGRI – DHULIKHEL (2,300m)
Drive from Old Tingri to Dhulikhel – a scenic hilltop settlement in Nepal. You will cross two high passes, Lalung La (5,124m) and Shung La (5,200m). After crossing the Friendship Bridge which marks the Chinese-Nepali border, you will pass immigration control at Kodari to enter Nepal. From here you will travel onwards to Dhulikhel. Overnight at hotel in Dhulikhel.
DAY 16: DHULIKHEL – KATHMANDU (1,400m) (28km)
1 hour drive from Dhulikhel to the medieval town of Bhaktapur. Opportunity to explore the historic&Durbar square and its many shrines and temples. From Bhaktapur you will travel to Patan for&sightseeing around the city of fine arts and culture. Onwards to Kathmandu. Overnight at hotel in&Kathmandu.
DAY 17: KATHMANDU
Day for sightseeing around Kathmandu to UNESCO World Heritage sites including: Pashupatinath temple, the most sacred Hindu temple of Nepal, dedicated to God Shiva, it is where sadhus come to pray and cremations take place on the ban Swayambhunath, colourfully decorated with prayer flags it is Nepal’s oldest Buddhist stupa and offers stunning views of the K Boudhanath stupa, one of the world’s biggest and most important Buddhist stupas and one of the only places in the world where you can see the daily routines of Ti and the famous historic Kathmandu Durbar Square. Farewell evening meal at traditional Nepali restaurant.
DAY 18: DEPART KATHMANDU
