Which of the following isTRUE? Which of the following…isNOTtrue?或All the following are true EXCEPT(4)排序题:这种题要求考生根据动作发生的先后顺序和句子之间的逻辑关系,找出事件发生的正确顺序。
W(when, where, who, why, what)和1个H(how),不过不是每篇都会完整地交待六个要素。

New York, the city that never sleeps, fell silent last week— bus and subway s flights were canceled, and even the stock market closed for the first time since 1985. All the disorder was caused by one thing, the arrival of hurricane Sandy.
This big storm landed on Oct 29 on the US east coast and brought damaging winds, flooding, blackouts (停电) and heavy snow. Sandy is one of the largest storms that have ever hit the US, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. By the afternoon of Nov1 (Beijing time), about 140 deaths were caused by the storm as it traveled across the Caribbean islands and into the US.
Unlike most hurricanes that happen during summer, Sandy was strengthened not only by warm ocean water, but also by the cold air coming from the northwest. Sandy’s power grew because of the difference in masses between the warm and wet air and cool and dry air. It became a kind of “super-storm”, the Guardian reported.
The flooding was particularly severe. Scientists said it was because Sandy’s arrival happened together with a full moon, which normally means higher-than-usual tides (潮水). “The most worrying aspect of Sandy is the high tides,” Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee told Reuters before the storm arrived. “With the full moon on Monday, with Sandy coming up the bay, we’re very concerned about flooding in our low-lying coastal areas.”Apart from the power of Sandy itself, another reason why her arrival has caused so much damage is that its target area is crowded with big cities such as New York and Philadelphia. These urban areas are home to tens of millions of people. The flood, the snow and the blackout have brought the country’s financial and political centers to a stop.& “The size of this alone, affecting a heavily populated area, is history making.” Said Jeff Masters, a hurricane specialist. 小题1:The author mentioned the disorder in New York city at the beginning of the article to _______.A.remind us of the problems people might face when disaster strikesB.introduce the disastrous influence of hurricane SandyC.criticize the poor management of the city by the New York governmentD.prove New York suffered most from hurricane Sandy小题2:According to the text, hurricane Sandy _______.A.only got its power from the warm ocean waterB.grew stronger than other hurricanes because of the full moonC.led to flooding in many cities around the USD.brought with it strong winds, high tides, blackouts and heavy snowfall小题3:From the article, we learn that areas hurricane Sandy targeted _______.A.were mostly high landB.were mostly near the seaC.were far away from important citiesD.were empty as people were evacuated 4:What is the main point of the article?A.To show how a super-storm comes into being.B.To explain why hurricane Sandy was so destructive. C.To show that big cities in the US are easily affected by huge hurricanes.D.To explore the best ways to avoid loss when a hurricane hits.

The law has a great many rules, showing when and how far a man is to be punished, or if he should be made to hand over money or property to his neighbors, and so on. These rules are contained in books. A lawyer learns them mainly by reading books.
He begins by doing little else than reading, and after he has prepared himself by three years’ study, still, he has to, almost every day, read more about some new questions which he has to answer.

Just a few hours ago,the Italian ship Andrea Doria was sailing through thick fog toward the city of New York. Captain Piero Calamai kept watch. He knew that many other ships were nearby. He should have slowed down because of the fog but he decided not to. He wanted to arrive on time the next morning. At about 11∶00 PM,another ship, the Stockholm, suddenly hit the Andrea Doria. It made a huge hole in the Italian ship. Some people were badly hurt. Others fell into the sea. But one girl was saved by the Stockholm.Linda Morgan was fourteen. She lived in Spain with her mother and her little sister. She was going to visit her father in New York. She was excited about seeing her father.Linda had loved the trip. She wanted to have dinner with the captain on the last night at sea. The captain did not sit at his table that night, though. He was busy guiding the ship through the fog. Linda did not get to talk to him. When Linda went to bed, everything seemed fine. Her mother turned off the lights. Linda talked to her little sister. She thought about seeing her father the next morning. What happened next was a terrible surprise. Linda woke up not knowing where she was. She was not in her bed. When she called to her family,no one answered. Both her knees were broken.Linda had been saved by an amazing accident. Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog. However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission. In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk ‘dog’, and dogs can learn how to talk ‘cat’. What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other’s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other. The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets — to people who don’t get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.小题1:The underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “without _________”.A.a messageB.a problemC.introductionD.delay小题2:Some cats and dogs may fight when _________.A.they are cold to each otherB.they look away from each otherC.they misunderstood each other’s signalsD.they are introduced at an early age小题3:What is found surprising about cats and dogs?A.They eat and sleep each other.B.They observe each other’s behaviors.C.They learn to speak each other’s language.D.They know something from each other’s voices.小题4:It is suggested in Paragraph 4 that cats and dogs _________.A.have common interestsB.are less different than was thoughtC.have a common body languageD.are less intelligent than was expected小题5:What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?A.We should learn to live in harmony.B.We should know more about animals.C.We should live in peace with animals.D.We should learn more body languages.

Britain has laws to make sure that women have the same chances as men in education, jobs and training. But it’s still unusual to find women doing dirty or heavy jobs. Nikki Henriques is a car maintenance engineer in London. She used to be a secretary. Barty Philips, a journalist with “The Observer”, a Sunday newspaper, asked her why she wanted to work with cars. “My first reason was independence(独立),” she said. “I also wanted to use my hands, and I like learning about how things work. Many people prefer to have a woman repair their cars, too.” Nikki didn’t find it easy to become a car maintenance engineer. She went to a Government Skill Centre—a special sort of college where people can learn a new job for twenty weeks. “For ten weeks I was the only woman among four hundred men, and some of them were rude to me. It was also very tiring—from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon, with only 30 minutes for lunch.” Now Nikki works free-lance, that is, she’s self-employed, working for herself and not for a garage or a company.Barty Phillips also spoke to Rose, who works as a general builder in Sheffield, an industrial town in the north of England. Like Nikki, Rose used to be a secretary. “I didn’t enjoy it at all.” she said. “I wanted to do more practical work, and I wanted to be self-employed.” Rose joined a women’s building co-operative, and she learnt her job from other people and from experience. However, many of the women in her group have been specially trained. Most of the jobs they do are improvements to buildings and general repairs. “People often say, ‘Oh, women aren’t strong enough,’ but I don’t think strength is important.” said Rose, “The important thing is to get used to doing a different sort of work.” Rose would like more women to come into the building industry. “Everything built at the moment is a product of man’s world. If women become builders, they will be able to understand the production of their house and their towns.” 小题1:There are laws in Britain to help women _____.A.get higher pay than menB.enjoy more freedom than menC.do whatever they like to doD.have equal chances with men in education and work小题2:The job of a car maintenance engineer is to _____.
