I grew up in a family that ate dinner together every evening.
Although my parents enjoyed
wine, they rarely drank during the week and always in
moderation(节制).As for myself,1 wasn't
interested in alcoholic drinks and neither were my high school
So when I arrived on campus for my first year of university
life, I was a bit shocked.
Many different events had been organized for the freshmen, but
they all had one thing in
common-alcohol, and plenty of .it wanting to be left out, I
joined a few of the events. But I
always returned home early, feeling disappointed. Your
personality, interests and experiences
didn't matter at all, only how many alcoholic drinks you could
absorb before passing out(喝醉).
It seemed shallow to me. I wanted to get to know my new
coursemates, not how fast they. could
down a pint of beer.
Gradually, however, I realized that real friends don't judge you
by how much you can
drink and there were other ways of making friends. I joined a
photography society, took a first
aid course, and every weekend l went cycling with a coursemate.
I found that by engaging in
these activities and sharing the fun of learning new skills
together in a group ,I formed much
stronger bonds with my new friends than even the strongest
alcoholic drinks could encourage.
Another valuable lesson I learned is that it's perfectly okay to
say "No" if you don't want
to drink. However, in many Western societies, especially the UK,
binge drinking(狂喝)has become
the norm. Many people who drink don't necessarily want to, but
they give in to the peer
pressure(同伴压力)-they're afraid to say "No".
21. What shocked the author when he entered university?
A. The strange campus. B. The popularity of alcohol.
C. The drunken coursemates. D. The limited activities.
22. Why did the author return home early from the events at
A. He wasn't good at drinking. B. He had no familiar
coursemates.
C. He hated the way people got along. D. He was left out by the
organizers.
23. How did the author finally make real friends at
university?
A. By saying "No" to alcoholic drinks.
B. By staying away from group activities.
C. By giving in to the peer pressure.
D. By joining people with common interests.

University, answering students'

If you watch British television on March 15, you might be
surprised to see celebrities(名人)
wearing funny
around. But don't worry.
They're not mad. It's all part of
a money raising event called Red Nose Day.
Founded in 1985 by two British comedians, the aim of the event
is to raise money to fight
poverty and injustice in the UK and Africa. Celebrities and
public figures support the event by
making appearances on comic TV shows. For example, UK Prime
Minister David Cameron once
appeared in a music video by One Direction, which the band
produced for the event.
Britons don't just raise money for charitable causes on one day
a year, but they do it all
year round. One way of doing so is by shopping in charity shops.
These small shops sell clothes,
books and household goods just like any other shop except that
it's all secondhand.
There are nearly 10,000 charity shops in the UK. Their business
model is simple: Anybody
who has things they don't want anymore can donate them to a
charity shop, where they are
checked for damage, cleaned and priced. The money that is made
by selling them is used for a
charitable cause.
The idea of buying used clothes may sound unpleasant, but for shoppers who have
spending money, it has been a welcome option. Now, shopping at
charity shops is also becoming
popular with young people looking for alternative fashion. "You
can find very unique clothes for
a very cheap price. It doesn't bother me that other people may
have worn them. I simply wash
them before I wear them." said Anne Marie, a 19-year-old from
So next time you spot a charity shop, why not go inside? Who
knows, you might find a
lovely dress for just a few pounds. Even better, you can enjoy
wearing it in the knowledge that
your money helped a good cause.
32. Why did Cameron appear in One Direction's music video?
A. To earn a living. B. To support the band.
C. To help raising money. D. To entertain the audience.
33. Where are the goods of charity shops from?
A. Local bands. B. People's donation.
C. British comedians. D. The UK government.
34. What's Anne Marie's attitude to charity shops?
A. Favorable. B. Particular. C. Doubtful. D. Disapproving.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Red Nose Day. B. British celebrities.
C. Charity in Britain. D. Secondhand shops.

M: Yes. The speech should be for 20 minutes, is that right?
W: Yes, but 20 minutes in total, including 5 minutes for
questions. So you’ll only talk for 15 minutes.
M: I won’t be able to say much in that time at all.
W: That’s why you have to plan what you’re going to say
carefully and make sure you only include the most important
information. For instance, you won’t have time to give examples.
But you could give some images that show examples, without spending
time talking about them.
M: That’s a good idea. And the audience can look at them while I
talk. Thanks a lot for your help.
M: Excuse me, Lily. Could you help me? You know we’ve got an
essay to write about eating customs across the world?
W: Yeah. We have to borrow some books, don’t we?
M: Yes, but I missed the library training. Could you tell me
something about the library?
W: Sure, no problem. Let me tell you about the different parts
of the library first. Here, you can see the main door in the north
that leads into the hall. In the middle of the building, there is a
big open PC zone. The stairs are on the left as you go in, and on
the other side of the building there’s the library caf&. It’s a
good place to study with friends.
M: I really prefer to study alone.
W: Oh, if you like studying in a quiet place, it’s better to go
upstairs, to the silent zone. It’s just on the second floor.
M: OK, thanks.
M: Excuse me, do you mind if I sit here?
W: Of course not, go ahead.
M: Thanks. I’m on my way to Washington, and you?
W: To San Francisco.
M: Really? I think San Francisco is probably the most exciting
place in the US.
W: So do I. No other city has as many good restaurants or as
much good music.
M: Is San Francisco your hometown?
W: No, I’m from a very small town in Pennsylvania. I don’t want
to live there any longer. I don’t like small town life very
M: En, neither do I really. But small towns have their
advantages, like less traffic and so on.
W: And friendly people. You know I’m beginning to feel homesick.
By the way, where are you from?
W: China? But you speak English just like a native speaker. I
didn’t have any idea.
M: Hi, Polly, this is James. I was just ringing to check that
you’re still OK to come camping with me at the weekend and tell you
what I’ve planned. My parents thought it was probably better not to
go too far away because the weather hasn’t been very good this week
and if it rains all the time we might want to come home! They
suggested we go to the campsite just outside
Guilsfield. That’s a village not far away. We can catch a bus to
the village, and then we’ll walk from the bus stop to the campsite.
It’s on a farm. I stayed there once, about five years ago, with my
parents and we had a car then of course, but we’ll be OK. I’ve
talked to my parents about what we need to take. Well, you’ve got a
tent which doesn’t weigh too much, so can you bring that? There’s
no need to bring food because we can eat at the farmhouse, but we
need something for boiling water for drinks. I can bring something
to cook on. And I’ll bring coffee and milk. We must get the tent up
before dark on Friday, which is about eight. So we must meet at the
bus stop at a quarter to four to catch the four o’clock bus. We’ll
be there by five, then. I’m so excited! Call me back soon, bye.
