Gunnar Hubbard is a recognized leader in green building across the United States and in Asia, Europe and the Middle East with 25 years of experience as a licensed architect, consultant, educator and advocate. As a principal and Thornton Tomasetti’s Sustainability practice leader, he oversees green building experts in the New York City, London, San Francisco and Portland, Maine, offices and collaborates with the firm’s six other practices and all offices.
Multiple Project Types and Worldwide Locations
Gunnar has played a key sustainability role on a wide variety of building types, including commercial, educational, residential, research and healthcare facilities, hotels, high rises and museums. As “keeper of the environmental mission of a project,” he guides world-renowned architects and unites building professionals on an integrative path to design high-performance green buildings internationally. He has delivered more than 100 projects, ranging from the $8.4 billion hotel, retail and residential CityCenter Las Vegas to green certification for 12 million square feet of real estate in Sweden and a net zero energy LEED-Platinum education center in Maine.
A Green Building Pioneer
Gunnar founded his own firm, Fore Solutions, in 2003, which Thornton Tomasetti acquired in 2012. Earlier in his career, he worked as a research scholar at the Rocky Mountain Institute focusing on environmentally responsible architecture and development. He has been influential with green building standards and certification systems for decades, most notably with LEED in the United States, and is conversant with BREEAM in the United Kingdom and the 3 Star rating system in China.
Training and Academic Teaching
Gunnar develops and leads green building workshops around the world. He has been LEED Faculty since 2004 and was named LEED Fellow in 2012. He oversees the Thornton Tomasetti license from the U.S. Green Building Council to teach curriculum to groups in the United States and abroad, most recently in Shanghai and Stockholm. He has also taught undergraduate and graduate classes at Cornell University, Ball State University and the Yestermorrow Design/Build School.
Outside of Work
When not exploring new cities on business trips, Gunnar makes time to ski with his kids and attend their sporting and music events, as well as to mountain bike and adventure in the great outdoors.
