In the sixteenth century, an age of great marine and terrestrial exploration, Ferdinand Magellan led the first expedition to sail around the world. As a young Portuguese noble, he served the king of Portugal, but he became d in the quagmire of political intrigue at court and lost the king's favor. After he was dismissed from service to the king of Portugal, he offered to serve the future Emperor Charles V of Spain.
A papal decree of 1493 had assigned all land in the New World west of 50 degrees W longitude to Spain and all the land east of that line to Portugal. Magellan offered to prove that the East Indies fell under Spanish authority. On September 20, 1519, Magellan set sail from Spain with five ships. More than a year later, one of these ships was exploring the topography of South America in search of a water route across the continent. This ship sank, but the remaining four ships searched along the southern peninsula of South America. Finally they found the passage they sought near a latitude of 50 degrees S. Magellan named this passage the Strait of All Saints, but today we know it as the Strait of Magellan.
One ship deserted while in this passage and returned to Spain, so fewer sailors were privileged to gaze at that first panorama of the Pacific Ocean. Those who remained crossed the meridian we now call the International Date Line in the early spring of 1521 after ninety-eight days on the Pacific Ocean. During those long days at sea, many of Magellan's men died of starvation and disease.
Later Magellan became involved in an insular conflict in the Philippines and was killed in a
battle. Only one ship and seventeen sailors under the command of the Basque navigator Elcano d to
the westward journey to Spain and thus prove once and for all that the world is round, with no precipice at the edge.

  In the nineteenth century the Romantic genre of literature became an important modeof expression for many Black American writers. Afrequent characteristic of Romantic writing is the use of Black writers have used this genre to transforman oftenharsh historical reality into animagined world ruled by their own ethical vision.In transforming history into fiction, Romantic writers have given their work a mythic quality thatdeepens the significance of plots,characters, and historical events.
  Clotel, a novel written in 1853 by William WellsBrown, is an early example from this romantic tradition. Clotel&s heroes are idealized, fighting slavery through superhuman action. For Brown, the Black man or woman was destined to move toward spiritualperfection, but was being blocked by the dehumanizing effects of slavery. The conflicts in Clotel are both an ongoing political one,between slaves and their owners, and a wider moral conflict between good and evil.
  More than a hundred years after Brown wrote,Black writers like Toni Morrison and David Bradley continue in the Romantic tradition. Both Morrison and Bradley write about Black characters who undertake the archetypalquest for selfhood. Their characters arecompelled to confront not only their own histories but the history of their cultures. Interestingly, both of these writers seem to be walking the same path as their characters, employing rhetorical devices and themes characteristic of old African legends.

联系电话:400-601-0022 | 隐私申明 | 京ICP证050284号 | 京公网安备94号 | 京东工商留学广审[2003]年 第0008号新年SSAT冲刺,你准备好了吗? 附2月3日SSAT考试真题回忆解析新年SSAT冲刺,你准备好了吗? 附2月3日SSAT考试真题回忆解析教育参考百家号风雨送春归,飞雪迎春到。不知不觉间,2018年农历新年已悄然而至,难得的新年假期你是否已准备好为3月3日SSAT考试作最后一搏?3月SSAT考试冲刺我来了……写作篇SSAT写作虽然不算分,但一篇不可多得的好文章,仍然能让招生官兴味盎然,眼前一亮,增加申请成功的砝码。首先需要注意的是,备考Middle Level SSAT考试的同学们,写作的两个备选题都是创意型写作,而准备Upper Level SSAT考试的同学们可以在创意和议论型(或者说明型)两个题目中任选一个完成。针对创意性写作,通常同学们在写文章、想故事时,容易从自身出发(例如:我今天和同学玩了游戏,还打了球,最后我们很开心回家了)最后写的文章欠缺趣味,再加上语言积累薄弱,表达平实,导致文章可读性不高;通常咱们可以通过以下方式解决这个问题。一,架构故事三要素,丰富思路,避免流水账。好故事最基本要包含起因,发展和结束这三部分。例如日Upper Level创意类考题Sherealized thatshealready said too much.起因:学生需要准备毕业典礼的演讲;发展:毕业典礼出现意外情况,原定演讲时间需延长;结束:学生凭借自身的积累和临场应变“尴尬”地化解了危机;完整故事可以是:校长要求学生作为优秀毕业生代表在毕业典礼上作演讲,学生为此绞尽脑汁,积极准备。但毕业典礼当天,排在学生前面,原定要作演讲的老师突然生病请假了,而此时下一个演讲者还没有到现场,为了不影响毕业典礼的整体安排,该学生的演讲被迫由要求的三分钟变成了十分钟。学生只好赶鸭子上架,硬着头皮将自己准备的演讲内容讲完,然后联系自己的生活和学习经历,旁征博引,学生越说越起劲儿,完全没意识到自己已然超时,主持人多次暗示,都被学生忽略了。终于,学生讲完了,但因为演讲时间太长,下一位演讲者的时间被挤占了,只能取消。二,是丰富表达,增加文章可读性。运用修辞手法,例如比喻,拟人等;还可以运用5种感官的描写,例如视觉,听觉等;名词添加合适的形容词修饰,副词添加搭配得当的副词修饰。针对议论或说明型写作,同学们尤其要注意对话题的解读。例如,日Upper Level说明类考题Describe a time you have toleadership.同学们可以从“What-Why-How”这三个方面对这个说明类话题进行展开,当然“How”是最关键的,对于此题来说,对需要leadership的time描述显得尤为关键,同学们可以从当时事情发展的客观情况,场景内人物的反应着手进行详细的描述,例如“老师布置了一项小组调查任务,小组成员对于个人任务分配意见不一,纷纷对安排的任务不满意,大家各抒己见,面面相觑,气氛一度僵持;此时作为组长的我,主动提出列出每个成员的优劣势,投票决定工作安排,最终各人明确了自身任务并积极投入到小组调查之中”。词汇篇俗话说“工欲善其事,必先利其器”,要想在SSAT词汇考试中拔得头筹,斩获高分,准确全面的考点词表,合理灵活的背词安排绝对必不可少。任何一项英语考试都有自身的命题规律,忽视考试规律,盲目背词,一味扩大词汇量,最终只会起到事倍功半的效果。一本好的词表至少应做到以下两点,收录词汇全,单词释义准,最好是每个单词都配有音标、词义、例句和同义词。要想背”好“词汇,有了针对性的词表,不掌握良好的背词方法也是行不通的。通常在考试中,SSAT词汇注重意群词汇的考查。例如,日SSAT考试词汇部分考到了如下意群(标红划线词汇为本次考试出现词汇):“减缓,抚慰”:(动词)mitigate, appease, assuage, conciliate, mollify, pacify, placate, smooth, comfort, console, relieve, ease, compose;“争吵的,争论的”:(名词)altercation, broil, contention, controversy, skirmish, (动词)contend, brawl, (形容词)disputant, contentious, disputatious, eristic,“尊敬,崇拜”:(名词)homage, esteem, admiration, deference,(动词)admire, hallow, honor,(形容词)admiring, respected,“明白的,清晰的”:(形容词)palpable, obvious, blatant, overt, conspicuous, evident, clear, limpid, prominent, visible, explicit, intelligible,(动词) (副词)obviously, (名词)clarity, clearness;“古老的,原始的”:(形容词)antiquated, anterior, primitive, primordial,“诡计,策略”:(名词)ruse, artifice, trick, device,, knack, scheme, sleight, stratagem,“积聚,贮藏”:(名词)hoard, cache, stash, stockpile,此外,在背词时间安排上,通常建议大家采取 “强化背诵,滚动复习”的背词策略,因为根据德国心理学家艾宾浩斯的记忆遗忘曲线,遗忘在学习之后立即开始,而且遗忘的进程并不是均匀的。最初遗忘速度很快,以后逐渐缓慢。以背诵词汇1-200为例,若不及时复习,1天后会遗忘70%左右,若6天不复习,会遗忘80%左右,因此大家背单词时需滚动复习,不断强化单词记忆。数学篇数学两个部分的考试时间各30分钟,各25题。题型均为5选1的选择题。题目中不会有复杂的精确计算,但是考查估算能力,计算器不允许带入考场。考试要点如下:1.基础运算:包括分数,小数,百分数(分数的加减乘除基本运算,小数的加减乘除基本运算);2.代数,指数,平方,平方根;3.坐标几何(直线上两个点的距离,直线斜率,给出三个点的坐标,求由这三个的坐标组成的三角形的面积等等);4.几何(常见的有圆和三角形,长方形,正方形,梯形的周长和面积,长方体和正方体的周长和面积等等);5.应用题逻辑题(银行利率,折扣问题和汽油问题等);6.表格题,图形题;7.量度单位的换算1yard=3feet1foot=12inches1pound=16ounces1gallon=4quarts1quart=2pints1dollar=100cents1quarter=25cents1dime=10cents1nickel=5cents8.概率9.创新题同学们在复习时,要注重对考点、题目和选项的理解,搞清楚自己的薄弱项进行针对性练习。SSAT文学和美国历史相关内容;考试文体多样,涉及说明文,记叙文,小说和诗歌。考前同学们应当保证词汇量,复习长句分析方法和不同体裁文章的结构及考点。比如说明文最重要的是通过每段首尾句把握住文章的主旨;诗歌喜欢考察作者传达的情感和运用的修辞手法,把握中心词和态度词。考试题型解题技巧:1.主旨题--根据每段首末句把握段落和文章主旨;2.细节题--根据关键词回原文定位;3.推断题--运用排除法,排除掉无中生有、简答复述和推理过度类的选项;4.词汇题—将选项词汇代入原文;5.组织结构题--紧扣原文主旨,排除掉无关选项;6.语气题—抓住不同感情色彩的态度词;此外,在考试时,同学们可以依据自己擅长的文章类型,自行调整做题顺序,做题切忌主观臆断,凡事应当立足文章,有理有据。最后,祝愿各位同学新年快乐,万事如意,在3月的中斩获高分,梦想成真。本文由百家号作者上传并发布,百家号仅提供信息发布平台。文章仅代表作者个人观点,不代表百度立场。未经作者许可,不得转载。教育参考百家号最近更新:简介:片言之赐,皆我师也。作者最新文章相关文章后使用快捷导航没有帐号?
